Abstract

AbstractThis study simulates flow instability in marine axial fans within HVAC systems, arising from operational practice where crew members partially close dampers to reduce airflow or fully closing dampers in areas without cooling demand. While this adjustment is operationally convenient, it can degrade fan performance and increase vibration and pressure fluctuations, thereby affecting the system's operational reliability. Through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, the results indicate that as the damper opening decreases, system resistance rises, shifting the fan's operating point toward a low-flow and high-pressure region. This leads to the formation of vortices and an increased risk of aerodynamic stall. Notably, when the damper is 70–75% closed, the significant reduction in airflow limits motor cooling capacity, leading to an increased risk of motor overheating and potential burnout despite the absence of electrical overload. The research also demonstrates that reducing the fan's rotational speed significantly improves flow stability. Consequently, the authors propose solutions such as utilizing variable frequency drives (VFD) for flow regulation and installing pressure sensors for monitoring to enhance system reliability and longevity. Keywords: Marine axial fan; Flow instability; stall; CFD, damper.
