I See Nothing . . . Atheism as the Condition of Credible Theological Grammar

Abstract

How can theology maintain credibility when belief in God is optional? This article argues that atheism functions as the existential ground for credible theological grammar in post-Christendom contexts. Examining Tomáš Halík’s recuperation of atheism as ‘impatience with God’ and Emmanuel Falque’s phenomenological treatment of ‘seeing nothing’ as the fundamental human condition, I propose that experiential atheism constitutes theology’s methodological imperative. Grounded in incarnational logic, credible theology must begin with shared finitude rather than transcendent certainties.
