Abstract

Temperament is a heterogeneous construct that captures individual differences in reactivity and regulation. Traditionally, dimensions of temperament are used over temperament types that may better capture heterogeneity. Using a racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of twins (N = 997 twins; 51.4% female; 58.5% White, 24.0% Hispanic; 28.7% at or below the poverty line), we modeled associations between primary-caregiver-reported temperament (age: M = 8.43 years) and later cross-reporter factors of anxiety, depression, externalizing, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder symptoms (age: M = 10.88 years) and estimated latent genetic effects using temperament dimensions and types. The dimension of effortful control was negatively associated with all psychopathology symptoms over and above negative emotionality and surgency, and temperament types yielded more nuanced results. We also uncovered a larger role of the shared environment for temperament and symptoms of psychopathology independently and in their relation than previous research has suggested. Findings provide greater specificity to current understanding of the relation between temperament and psychopathology.

Temperament as a Risk Factor for Clinical Diagnosis During the Transition From Childhood Through Adolescence and Young Adulthood: A 16-Year Multimethod Longitudinal Study

Identifying early temperamental predictors of later psychopathology is crucial for detecting at-risk individuals and implementing targeted prevention efforts. However, there is limited research using laboratory-based observations of temperament and “gold-standard” assessments of psychiatric disorders across early adole...

Early-childhood temperament trajectories map onto transdiagnostic psychiatric risk.

Early-childhood temperament is associated with later mental health. Temperament continues to develop throughout the first years of life, and a single assessment cannot capture its trajectory. Whether departures from an individual's developmental trajectory carry psychiatric risk remains unknown. Using data from more th...

Shaping personality functioning: type and timing effects of childhood maltreatment on personality functioning.

Personality functioning (PF) is a transdiagnostic construct central to contemporary models of personality pathology and a key mechanism linking childhood maltreatment (CM) to adult mental health difficulties. Yet the relative contributions of CM subtype, developmental timing, and cumulative exposure characteristics to...

Neurocognitive and Temperament Predictors of Changes in Child and Adolescent Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors for Youths With and Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are an urgent concern, with elevated risk in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Drawing on the developmental psychopathology framework and socio-ecological model of suicide risk, this study examined trajectories of STBs in youth with and without ADHD and their predic...

Modeling the Associations Between Personality, Cognition, and Social Determinants in Relation to Substance Use Disorder Severity in Community Adults.

OBJECTIVE To develop more effective intervention strategies for substance use disorder (SUD), it is essential to create models that evaluate the relative influence of various risk factors. This study constructed an integrated biopsychosocial model to examine the associations of different risk vulnerability domains with...
