A sustainable way to combat hunger is biofortification, which entails using genetic engineering or traditional breeding to increase the nutritional content of basic crops. The importance of biofortification in preventing world hunger is covered in this abstract, along with a summary of the methods used to enrich crops with vital nutrients. The efficacy of several biofortification techniques, such as traditional breeding, transgenic approaches and agronomic practices, in raising the concentrations of essential elements like iron, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C in staple crops including rice, wheat, maize, and cassava is being investigated. This abstract highlights the success stories of biofortified crops, such as iron and zinc-enriched beans, vitamin A-rich rice, and selenium-fortified wheat. These crops have demonstrated the potential to contribute significantly to alleviating nutrient deficiencies, especially in regions where traditional diets lack essential micronutrients. It also highlights the necessity of multidisciplinary cooperation between farmers, policymakers, nutritionists, breeders, and plant scientists in order to enhance global public health outcomes and hasten the adoption of biofortified crops. Biofortification stands as a promising avenue for enhancing crop nutrient content and addressing global malnutrition challenges. Continued research, investment, and collaboration are crucial to advancing biofortification strategies and realizing their potential to improve the nutritional status of populations worldwide.
It is argued that the convergence of multiplexed genome editing, base and prime editing, and multi-omics-guided candidate gene discovery is positioning precision breeding to accelerate the second generation of biofortified vegetables, provided that regulatory harmonisation and public engagement keep pace with the under...

Hidden hunger refers to micronutrient deficiencies affecting nearly two billion people globally, especially in regions dependent on calorie-rich but nutrient-poor staple diets. Legumes, termed as the "poor man's meat" for their high protein content and low cost, are critical for enhancing nutritional security in resour...

Background: Inadequate intakes of iodine, iron, zinc, selenium, folate and several vitamins remain widespread, and biofortification, the enrichment of edible plant parts with nutrients during crop growth, has become an established complement to supplementation and industrial fortification. Most biofortification researc...

As the global human population continues to grow, ensuring food security becomes increasingly difficult, particularly as soil nutrient levels and fertility decline. To address the increasing food needs, improving agricultural productivity is urgently necessary. The widespread use of chemical fertilizers to boost food p...

Unsustainable agricultural practices and overreliance on chemical fertilizers have led to severe environmental issues, such as soil and water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and risks to human and animal health. Moreover, plant diseases continuously decrease crop productivity and threaten global food security. Therefo...
