Abstract

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a neonicotinoid insecticide used in agriculture, domestic environments, and veterinary medicine. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible toxic effects of an IMI based commercial formulation on oxidative parameters, renal and mitochondrial functions and genotoxicity. Adult Wistar rats received oral doses of 1.5; 5 and 15mg/kg of an IMI suspension for 45 days. The 1.5mg/kg group showed a reduced polychromatic/normochromatic micronucleus ratio and increased polychromatic cells, indicating genotoxic damage. An increase in spleen lipoperoxidation and in the activity of the blood catalase were observed in the 5mg/kg IMI treated group. Increase in the activity of the hepatic mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I-IV was observed in all groups. Histopathological analysis revealed alterations in the liver, kidneys and spleen at 5 and 15mg/kg. Although IMI presents selectivity for insects, our study demonstrated systemic alterations and genotoxicity in rats, suggesting possible toxicity in mammals.

SUBACUTE EXPOSURE TO A COMMERCIAL S-METOLACHLOR/FLUMIOXAZIN FORMULATION INDUCES SYSTEMIC, GENOTOXIC, AND REDOX ALTERATIONS IN WISTAR RATS.

Repeated exposure to the commercial formulation elicited systemic and genotoxic effects and disrupted redox homeostasis under the tested experimental conditions, providing evidence of disrupted redox homeostasis across the evaluated brain regions.

Toxicokinetics, Biotransformation, and Tissue Distribution of Imidaclothiz in Rats

Imidaclothiz (IMZ), a next-generation neonicotinoid pesticide, has garnered significant attention due to its detection in human samples. In this study, we investigated its toxicokinetics and biotransformation in rats following oral administration. IMZ was rapidly absorbed, reaching peak plasma concentration at 0.75 h...

Assessment of paraquat-induced hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats

Paraquat is a widely used herbicide causing oxidative stress and toxicity after exposure. Despite evidence of toxicity, histological evaluation of dose-dependent hepatic and renal damage following subchronic exposure is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the effects of paraquat administration on hepatotoxicity an...

Acute Oral Toxicity of an Alkaloid-Rich Fraction of Nauclea diderrichii Stem Bark in Wistar Rats: Biochemical and Histopathological Evaluation

The study evaluated the acute oral toxicity of an alkaloid-rich fraction derived from the stem bark of Nauclea diderrichii, a plant traditionally used in Sub-Saharan Africa for various ailments including malaria and gastrointestinal disorders. Acute oral toxicity was assessed in Wistar rats using Lorke’s method (Phase...
