Abstract

This study aimed to identify an Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS) mortar mixture balancing flowability and compressive strength as a sustainable alternative to Portland cement. Twenty-seven mixtures varying activator dosage, modulus, water-to-binder ratio, aggregate-to-binder ratio, and superplasticizer content were evaluated using a Taguchi L27 design, ANOVA, and PCR-TOPSIS optimization. Activator dosage was most influential (70.90% contribution), followed by aggregate-to-binder ratio (10.12%), while modulus and water-to-binder ratio played minor roles. The optimal mixture (flow 115%, strength 48.85 MPa) was validated by an independent replicate batch, with an estimated 79% lower CO2 footprint than a Portland-cement control. Reaction mechanisms were not confirmed microstructurally. Unlike prior single-response approaches, this study combines statistical validation, experimental confirmation, and environmental estimation for a more rigorous mortar design basis.

Optimization of a ternary geopolymer paste through orthogonal experimental design, ANOVA and entropy-based multi-objective decision analysis

The optimization of geopolymer binders containing multiple aluminosilicate precursors is challenging because the governing mix parameters simultaneously influence mechanical performance, workability, and material cost. Existing studies primarily focus on individual performance indicators, resulting in suboptimal mix de...

Synergistic Regulation of Waste Glass Powder and Aggregate Packing Structure for Sustainable Cement Mortar: Microstructural Mechanisms and XGBoost-PSO Intelligent Mix Design Optimization

Waste glass powder (WGP) is a promising recycled constituent for sustainable cementitious materials, yet its effectiveness depends strongly on the packing characteristics of the fine-aggregate skeleton. This study investigates the coupled effects of WGP replacement ratio and fine-aggregate gradation on the mechanical p...

Effect of Activator-to-Binder Ratio and Curing Temperature on the Properties of Low-Density Alkali-Activated Mortar Incorporating Phragmites Australis Ash

Valorizing agricultural residues as cement-free binders may reduce dependence on Portland cement. However, the performance of silica-rich biomass ashes under alkali activation remains insufficiently understood. This study explores the effects of alkali activator-to-binder ratio (Al/B), curing temperature, and age on mo...

A Study on the Mechanical Properties of Engineered Geopolymer Composites Based on Red Mud, Fly Ash, and Slag

To promote the valorization of red mud (RM), a high-volume industrial solid waste, engineered geopolymer composites (EGC) were developed using a ternary binder comprising ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), fly ash (FA), and RM. Ten mixtures were designed using a simplex-centroid method, and the effects of bin...
