The Impact of Production Loan towards Productivity of Corn Farmers in Sarangani Province

Abstract

This study examined the impact of production loans on the productivity of corn farmers in Sarangani Province, Philippines. It specifically investigated the socio-economic characteristics of farmers, the reasons for availing production loans, the factors influencing corn productivity, the effect of production loans on yield, and the profitability of corn production. A descriptive-correlational design was employed, and data were collected from 315 farmer respondents using structured questionnaires. Frequency and percentage analyses were used to describe socio-economic profiles, while ranking and thematic analysis identified the primary reasons for loan utilization. Factors affecting productivity were analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and Generalized Linear Models (GLM), while the impact of production loans was explored using an impact pathway approach. Cost and return analysis determined the economic viability of corn farming.

A socioeconomic study of soybean production in Bangladesh

This study was undertaken to estimate the financial profitability and to assess the factors affecting adoption of soybean production in Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts of Bangladesh. To collect primary data, a structured interview schedule was used to interview 90 farmers using stratified random sampling technique. A combination of descriptive, mathematical and statistical techniques were employed to analyze the data. According to the findings, 47 percent of farmers were small in farm size category. Financial profitability analysis shows that soybean production was profitable with benefit cost ratio (1.43). The logit regression model demonstrated that farmers’ education, farm size, farm income, extension contact, crop diversification practiced, and distance to market had a significant effect on farmers' decision to pursue soybean cultivation.The research findings also indicated that higher price of seed and fertilizer, low price of output and lack of transportation facilities were the major problems for input, production and marketing of soybean, respectively. Among all the problems, high price of seed and fertilizer had the highest problem confrontation index value (255) as first rank. The study recommended for ensuring affordable price of seed and fertilizers along with better infrastructure and transportation facilities to overcome the problems. Furthermore, government needs to implement subsidy scheme and assistance should be provided from the personnel of Department of Agricultural Extension to enhance soybean production in Bangladesh. IMPLICATIONS OF AGRICULTURAL SUBSIDIES ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY IN MEZAM, CAMEROON

This study investigated the effect of agricultural subsidies on farm productivity in Mezam, Cameroon. The study made used of primary survey via a structured questionnaire and snowball sampling technique to obtain data from 352 farmers in Mezam. Regression analyses were done using the Generalised Linear Model. Results show that agricultural subsidies is negatively corroborating with agricultural productivity revealing that dispite the governmental effort to provide subsidies to farmers not all the entire subsidies is channel for the intended purpose. The result is both male and female phenomenon. The study suggests that the redesigning of subsidy programs to explicitly stimulate agripreneurial behavior and to improve productivity. Subsidy packages with market supports schemes like buyer linkages, agro-processing and cooperatives which can help convert productivity into sales is greatly encouraged by this study. Policy designers should consider supporting rural farmers with infrastructure and market access to fully leverage subsidies for agripreneurial activities and to improve farm productivity.

Impact of Agricultural Credit on Input Use and Paddy Productivity in Tripura

Agricultural loan or credit is crucial for overcoming financial constraints, promoting productive and efficient input use, and improving agricultural productivity among marginal and small farmers. This study examines the importance of formal and informal agricultural credit in affecting input use, paddy productivity, and distress sale among farm households in Tripura. The study is based on primary data collected from 370 paddy-growing households across eight selected villages in Sepahijala and South Tripura districts. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are employed to identify the determinants of formal credit demand and distress sale and to assess the effects of credit on input use and paddy productivity. The findings suggest that irrigation, education, operated area, family labour availability, and agricultural production are important positive determinants of formal credit demand, whereas non-farm income is negatively associated with credit demand. Informal credit is positively associated with income loss from distress sale, while access to formal credit and regulated markets reduces such losses. Both formal and informal credit have positive and significant associations with input use and paddy productivity, although the relationship is stronger for formal credit. The productivity model explains 71.2% of the variation, increasing to 78.1% after incorporating interaction effects. The findings further reveal that credit effectiveness varies across irrigation conditions and farm-size groups, with weaker outcomes among marginal farmers and in non-irrigated areas. The study suggests integrating timely formal credit delivery with irrigation development and improved market access to enhance productivity and reduce distress sales.

Technical Efficiency of Onion Farmers in Taraba State, Nigeria

Onion production is an important source of food, income, and employment for many rural households in Nigeria. Despite its economic importance, productivity among smallholder onion farmers remains below potential due to technical inefficiency in the use of available production resources. This study examined the technical efficiency of onion farmers in Taraba State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected from 254 onion farmers using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the stochastic frontier production model. The results revealed that the respondents were relatively young and economically active, with a mean age of 38 years, an average household size of 6 persons, and an average farming experience of 10 years. The estimated mean technical efficiency was 0.658, indicating that farmers achieved only 65.8% of the potential output, leaving room for a 34.2% improvement through more efficient use of existing resources. The estimated sigma-square value (0.0027) was statistically significant, confirming the suitability of the stochastic frontier model, while lambda value (2.23298) indicated that the differences between observed and potential output were mainly due to technical inefficiency. The gamma estimate of 0.83 further showed that 83% of the variation in onion output was attributable to technical inefficiency. Education, farming experience and age significantly improved farmers’ technical efficiency, whereas limited access to extension services and credit reduced efficiency. The study concludes that onion production in Taraba State has considerable potential for increased productivity through improved resource-use efficiency.

Determinants of Cassava Productivity Heterogeneity among Farmers in Nigeria: A Socioeconomic Perspective

This article investigates the assertion and generalisation of low productivity among cassava farmers in Nigeria. The dataset obtained from the General Household Survey Panel Data (GHS-P) of the Living Standard Measurement Survey-Integrated Survey of Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) was used to generate a cassava productivity index, which was then analysed using a multinomial logit regression model. The analysis reveals that 78%, 7% and 15% of Nigerian cassava had low, moderate, and high productivity status, respectively. The main determinants and drivers of farmers’ high productivity are gender and farm size. Age, marital status, extension visits, and improved stem cutting contributed to farmers' low productivity. It is recommended that more policies be put in place to support and motivate young male graduates to engage in commercial (large-scale) cassava production, leveraging modern farming technologies and high-yielding cassava cultivars, with adequate training and encouragement for better cassava yield and productivity. Farmers’ Perceptions of Agricultural Input Subsidies and Their Impact on Agricultural Productivity in Pokhara

This study aims to investigate farmers’ perceptions of agricultural input subsides and their impact on agricultural productivity in the context of the Prime Minister Agricultural Modernization Project (PMAMP). This study employed both descriptive and causal-comparative research designs and was conducted among 1,012 registered farmers in Pokhara Metropolitan City. The sample size was 212 using the Rao soft sample size calculator. A sample of 201 farmers was surveyed using purposive and snowball sampling design for the selection of the study area from 19 different wards. Primary data were collected through a structured survey questionnaire with five point Likert scale administered through both physical and online using Google forms. The collected data were analyzed using some descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The findings of the study revealed that access to agricultural subsidies, access to credit and financial support, market proximity and infrastructure had significant positive effects on agricultural productivity, while land ownership status and regional disparities in subsidy allocation showed insignificant positive effect on agricultural productivity. In addition to, access to agricultural subsidies was the strongest predictor of agricultural productivity. Future research direction could be interventions needed to make input delivery methods, raise awareness and provide integrated support services.
