Economic Feasibility and Strategic Development of Urban Organic Rice Farming: Evidence from Semarang City, Indonesia

Abstract

This study evaluates the economic feasibility and strategic development of organic rice farming in Semarang City, Indonesia, as a response to the growing demand for sustainable agricultural practices. The research addresses the limited empirical evidence on the financial viability of organic rice farming in urban areas, which is crucial for farmers, policymakers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions. A quantitative-descriptive case study approach was employed, involving purposive sampling of organic rice farmers, field surveys, and in-depth interviews. Financial feasibility was assessed using Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C), and Payback Period, while strategic analysis was conducted using SWOT. The results show that organic rice farming is financially viable, with a positive NPV of IDR 24.3 million, IRR of 18.6%, B/C ratio of 1.63, and a discounted payback period of 1.7 years. SWOT analysis indicates that the industry is positioned in Quadrant I (aggressive strategy), suggesting strong internal capacity and favorable external opportunities. These findings prove that organic rice farming can be developed as a profitable and sustainable agribusiness model in urban areas. The study contributes to theory by integrating financial feasibility with strategic analysis and offers practical recommendations for policymakers.

Financial Feasibility Analysis of Rice Farming in Dawuan Barat Village, Cikampek Subdistrict, Karawang Regency

Rice farming plays an important role in supporting national food security and the rural economy in Indonesia. However, rice farmers face several challenges, including increasing production costs, limited farming capital, land conversion, and uncertainty in agricultural sustainability. Dawuan Barat Village, Cikampek District, Karawang Regency, is one of the rice production centers with high agricultural potential, but farmers still experience constraints related to land ownership, rental costs, and production inputs. This study aims to analyze the financial feasibility of rice farming in Dawuan Barat Village based on production costs, revenue, income, and feasibility indicators. The research used a quantitative descriptive method conducted in August 2023. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires involving 35 selected farmers using a simple random sampling technique from a population of 131 farmers. The analysis employed cost, revenue, income, Revenue-Cost Ratio (R/C Ratio), and Break Even Point (BEP) calculations. The results showed that the average production cost was IDR 31,226,778 per planting season per farmer, with revenue of IDR 48,834,286 and income of IDR 17,607,508. The R/C Ratio value reached 1.56, indicating that rice farming is financially feasible. Furthermore, BEP analysis demonstrated that the selling price, production volume, and revenue exceeded the break-even point. Based on land-scale analysis, small, medium, and large-scale farmers also obtained R/C Ratio values above 1. Therefore, rice farming in Dawuan Barat Village is profitable and feasible to be continuously developed.

Circular economy approach: A sustainable business model in transforming farmers’ livelihoods

The transition toward a circular economy in agriculture is essential for improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, and strengthening farmers’ livelihoods. This study aims to formulate a sustainable business model based on a circular economy approach to support the transformation of farmers’ livelihoods. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted using interviews, focus group discussions, field observations, and secondary data. The data were analyzed using SWOT, IFAS–EFAS, and TOWS matrices to identify internal and external strategic factors. The IFAS results show that strengths exceed weaknesses, with a difference of 0.415, while the EFAS results indicate that opportunities exceed threats, with a difference of 0.414. These findings place the farmers’ business position in the aggressive or SO quadrant. The key strategic insight is that farmers should prioritize market expansion for organic products, technology adoption, product differentiation, stronger partnerships, and research collaboration while gradually improving post-harvest processing, packaging, human resource regeneration, and access to financing. A circular economy-based sustainable business model is feasible for transforming farmers’ livelihoods by improving cost efficiency, product quality, supply stability, market access, and business resilience.

IDENTIFYING LEADING COMMODITIES FOR ACHIEVING RURAL ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY IN JANTHO TRANSMIGRATION AREA

This study aims to identify and determine potential leading commodities in the Jantho Transmigration Area, Aceh Besar Regency, within the framework of sustainable agriculture, agroindustry, and food security entrepreneurship. The background of this study is the limitations of rice as the leading commodity, including challenges with irrigation infrastructure, low productivity, and the lack of integration of the value chain with the agroindustry sector. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative data from observation, interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), along with quantitative analysis using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Research respondents included key stakeholders such as farmers, local governments, technical agencies, and local economic actors to evaluate alternative commodities based on agroecological, economic, and value chain structure. The study found that rice is limited in its ability to support sustainable economic development in the region. In contrast, plantation commodities, specifically candlenut, cocoa, and areca nut, demonstrate greater development potential due to suitable land, adaptability, and value addition opportunities. According to the AHP analysis, candlenut emerged as the priority leading commodity. Its strengths include strong agroclimatic suitability, steady market demand, and robust potential for local value chain development. The study concludes that developing candlenut will likely strengthen the rural economy by fostering agro-industrial processing and promoting local entrepreneurship.

Analysis of Economic Efficiency in Rice Production Among Smallholder Farmers in Shabe Sombo District, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia

Ethiopia faces persistent food security challenges owing to rapid population growth and low agricultural productivity. This study examines the technical, allocative, and economic efficiency of smallholder rice producers in Shabe Sombo District, Oromia Region, and identifies factors influencing efficiency. A two-stage sampling technique was used to select 255 farmers; primary data were collected for the 2022/23 production year. A stochastic frontier approach with a Cobb–Douglas production function was applied to estimate efficiency levels, while a two-limit Tobit model was used to identify determinants of efficiency. Land, chemical inputs, oxen power, and seed positively and significantly influence rice output, with estimated returns to scale of 0.96 indicating decreasing returns. Mean technical, allocative, and economic efficiency stood at 94%, 75%, and 70% respectively, indicating that allocative inefficiency is the dominant source of overall efficiency loss. Tobit results show that farm distance from homestead, household size, and market distance negatively affect technical efficiency, while sex of household head, farm size, and extension contact frequency have positive effects. Age, education level, and livestock ownership negatively influence allocative and economic efficiency; training participation has a positive effect. Policy interventions should focus on strengthening extension services, expanding access to training and education, improving rural infrastructure and access to credit.

Determinants and Perceived Impacts of Biogas Technology among Smallholder Dairy Farmers in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru, Kenya

The adoption of biogas technology has increasingly been recognized as a sustainable solution for addressing household energy needs, environmental degradation and poor waste management in rural communities. This study assessed the benefits and challenges of biogas adoption and examined the socio-economic drivers of technology uptake among smallholder dairy farmers in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru County, Kenya. A descriptive research design was employed with a multi-stage sampling method selecting 110 smallholder dairy farmers. Primary data was collected through semi-structured questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression using SPSS Version 24. Findings revealed that biogas technology was highly valued for reducing household energy costs (Mean = 4.98), lowering indoor air pollution (Mean = 4.98), reducing dependence on firewood (Mean = 4.97) and improving soil fertility through slurry application (Mean = 4.97). However, the high installation cost emerged as the greatest barrier to adoption (Mean = 4.89), while lack of technical knowledge (Mean = 3.13) also limited effective utilization. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that age, (B = -1.121, p = 0.047) and monthly income (B = -1.162, p = 0.021) were significantly negatively associated with adoption. In contrast, education level had a strong positive predictor as farmers with medium education level were 33.1 times more likely to adopt (p < 0.05). Gender, marital status, household size and land ownership were not statistically significant. The study concludes that while biogas technology offers substantial environmental, economic and health benefits, financial and technical barriers persist. To increase uptake among smallholder dairy farmers, financial support mechanisms and technical extension services need to be strengthened.

AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION AND RICE COMMERCIALISATION: EVIDENCE FROM THE MOUNT MBAPIT RURAL RICE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, NOUN DIVISION, CAMEROON

Despite Cameroon’s potential for rice self-sufficiency, smallholder farmers often face low productivity and limited market participation due to a lack of modern technological adoption. The Mount Mbapit Rural Rice Development Project was established to address these constraints by promoting agricultural innovations and enhancing rural livelihoods through value-chain development. This study evaluates the impact of agricultural innovations specifically improved seed varieties, mechanization, irrigation, and modern processing techniques on the level of rice commercialization among smallholders in the Noun Division. Using a cross-sectional survey design, primary data was collected from a representative sample of 290 smallholder rice farmers. Descriptive statistics were used to profile farmer characteristics and a multinomial logit regression model to identify the determinants of market participation and the intensity of commercialization. Preliminary evidence suggests that the adoption of innovations significantly increases both yields and the proportion of rice sold to the market. Key drivers of commercialization include agricultural innovation, membership in cooperatives, access to market information, off farm income, farm size, price and distance from the market. However, high input costs, irrigation and inadequate road infrastructure remain barriers to full market integration. The study confirms that agricultural innovation is a critical driver for transforming subsistence rice farming into a commercially viable enterprise in the study area.
