Abstract

This study investigates the dynamic response of G+7 storey reinforced concrete framed building with overhead water tank emphasizing the dynamic effects of liquid sloshing during earthquakes. Using ANSYS Workbench for finite element modelling and applying equivalent static analysis as per IS 1893:2014, the study evaluates structural behaviour under hydrodynamic loading. Results show that the impulsive sloshing mode generates a significant base shear of 1166.97 kN at a time period of 0.813 seconds, indicating the need for strong lateral load-resisting systems. The convective mode, with a longer time period of 1.797 seconds and base shear of 23.84 kN, contributes to prolonged vibrations that require effective damping strategies. Modal analysis highlights Mode 6 as the most critical, with maximum deformation of 0.19995 mm. Storey drift is highest at the lower levels and reduces with height, suggesting the need for targeted seismic design approaches. This research emphasizes the importance of integrating water sloshing effects into the seismic design of buildings and offers practical recommendations for enhancing resilience in earthquake-prone regions.

Hybrid Computational Strategy for Predicting Seismic Behaviour of High-Rise Buildings with Overhead Water Tank Interactions

This study investigates the seismic behavior of T-shaped, L-shaped, and C-shaped buildings with rectangular overhead water tanks, considering the influence of varying water levels (25%, 50%, and 75%) on structural integrity during seismic events. The analysis highlights that T-shaped and Lshaped buildings experience hi...

Seismic Response Analysis of a 3‐story Steel MRF Coupled with Pressurized Sand Dampers

Seismic resilience is critical in the design of modern structural systems, particularly for steel moment‐resisting frames (MRFs). Traditional energy dissipation mechanisms, such as viscous or friction dampers, are effective but often involve high installation and maintenance costs. This study investigates the performan...

Enhancing the seismic performance of plan irregular L-shaped reinforced concrete buildings using steel bracing systems

Seismic retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is often required because of deficiencies in their original design, changes in seismic provisions, or increased functional demands. This study evaluates the effectiveness of steel bracing for improving the seismic performance of a ten-story, plan-irreg...

Optimization of Shear Wall Placement to Improve Seismic Performance of High-Rise Buildings Using Pushover Analysis

High-rise reinforced concrete buildings are susceptible to seismic forces due to their slenderness and flexibility, necessitating effective lateral load-resisting systems. This study investigates the optimal placement of shear walls to enhance seismic performance. A seven-story symmetrical building model was developed...
