TL;DR

Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry-derived BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck in men with PCa receiving ADT and in age- and body mass index-matched healthy controls supports the potential role of REMS as a radiation-free tool for identifying reduced axial BMD in men with PCa undergoing ADT.

Abstract

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), used in selected patients with prostate cancer (PCa), is associated with accelerated bone loss and increased fragility fracture risk. Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry (REMS) is a non-ionizing ultrasound-based technique for axial bone mineral density (BMD) assessment. To evaluate REMS-derived BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck in men with PCa receiving ADT and in age- and body mass index-matched healthy controls. In this cross-sectional study, 143 Caucasian men were enrolled between October 2023 and October 2024: 83 patients with histologically confirmed PCa receiving ADT for at least 6 months and 60 healthy controls. REMS scans were performed at the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Between-group differences in BMD, T-score, and Z-score were assessed using an unpaired t -test. Compared with controls, patients receiving ADT showed lower REMS-derived BMD at the lumbar spine (0.885 ± 0.08 vs. 0.945 ± 0.11 g/cm²; p  = 0.007), corresponding to a 6.3% difference. Femoral neck BMD was also lower in the PCa group (0.691 ± 0.08 vs. 0.715 ± 0.10 g/cm²; p  = 0.01), corresponding to a 3.4% difference. These findings are consistent with the known skeletal effects of ADT and support the potential role of REMS as a radiation-free tool for identifying reduced axial BMD in men with PCa undergoing ADT. Longitudinal monitoring assessments are ongoing to clarify the temporal relationship between ADT exposure and progressive bone loss.

Longitudinal CT-derived muscle–fat–bone remodeling following androgen deprivation therapy initiation in prostate cancer

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a cornerstone of prostate cancer treatment and is commonly accompanied by longitudinal changes in muscle, adipose tissue, and skeletal health that may be poorly captured by conventional anthropometric measures. This study investigated whether routine oncologic computed tomograp...

Standardized Bone Health Assessment and Treatment Among Prostate Cancer Patients on Androgen Deprivation Therapy in a Large Integrated Managed Care Delivery System.

Background: Bone-health risk assessment and treatment among prostate-cancer patients on androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is often inadequately completed in clinical practice. Objective: To determine the impact of a population-management program on bone-health risk assessment and bisphosphonate therapy among prostate-...

Precision Selection for Targeted Radionuclide Therapy in Prostate Cancer: Biparametric MRI Radiomics Combined with Serum Bone Turnover Biomarkers for Predicting Postoperative Bone Metastasis.

OBJECTIVE Particularly for patients with bone-dominant illness, targeted radionuclide treatments are becoming a viable treatment option for metastatic prostate cancer (PCa). Precision treatment selection and improved therapeutic outcomes may result from early detection of patients who are at high risk of developing bon...

Application of Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry for Bone Mineral Density Screening in Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: A Multi-Institutional Study of 6 California Children's Hospitals.

Deficits in bone mineral density (BMD) represent a major late effect on survivors of childhood cancer and can lead to increased fracture risks and morbidity that can persist in late adulthood. Low BMD is defined as >2 SDs below the mean of the age- and sex-specific reference population (Z-score ≤-2). Current guidelines...

Correlation of Lumbar Spine MRI Signal Alterations with DEXA-derived Bone Mineral Density and T-scores: A Cross-sectional Analytical Study

Lumbar vertebral MRI signal alterations showed weak but statistically significant associations with DEXAderived BMD, suggesting that routinely acquired lumbar MRI may provide supplementary, opportunistic information on VBQ, although the modest strength of these correlations indicates that MRI signal cannot currently re...
