Abstract

“Turn-on” fluorescent sensors have garnered significant attention for their high signal-to-noise ratio. However, the development of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probes for Sc3+ detection remains limited, with only a few examples reported to date. In this work, we rationally designed and synthesized a novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative functionalized with Schiff-base-bridged isophthalhydrazide, achieving a satisfactory yield of 85%. The probe exhibits prominent AIE characteristics and demonstrates exceptional selectivity toward Sc3+ over a wide range of competing metal ions, including representative lanthanides, in THF/H2O (5 : 95, v/v) mixed medium, accompanied by a significant fluorescence “turn-on” response upon Sc3+ binding. The detection limit was determined to be 3.57 × 10−8 M. A comprehensive mechanistic investigation, including fluorescence titration, FT-IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectrometry, unequivocally established a 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry between the probe and Sc3+. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this sensor was successfully validated through test strip experiments and simulated water sample analyses, highlighting its potential for environmental monitoring and Sc3+ detection in aqueous-organic mixed media.

A Schiff base-functionalized europium metal-organic framework for turn-off fluorescence sensing of Cu2.

Developing a low-cost, highly sensitive, and accurate fluorescence-based approach for Cu2+ detection is crucial for reducing heavy metal pollution in industrial effluent. Here, we report a newly synthesized Schiff base europium metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) and demonstrate its use for turn-off fluorescent detection...

A Transition Metal Schiff Base Coordination Compound as a Chemosensor for Sensitive Detection of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol

In this study, a Schiff base-derived Pd(II) complex (L–Pd) was successfully synthesized and investigated as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), a highly hazardous nitroaromatic explosive pollutant. Fluorescence studies demonstrated that the L–Pd complex exhibits strong emission propert...

A "turn-on" Fluorescent Probe with Ions-induced ESIPT for the Detection of Cd2+ and Zn2.

Developing an Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement (AIEE) type probe with enhanced emission through metal ion-induced methods has been a significant challenge. In this work, we synthesized an AIEE fluorescent chemosensor P1 via a Schiff base reaction by 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carbaldehyde and 2,4-difluorophenylhydraz...

From solutions to living systems: a colorimetric and “turn-on” chemosensor for Co2+ with paper-strip and bioimaging applications

5-(4-Chlorophenoxy)-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde (PYA), a pyrazole-based fluorescent chemosensor, was synthesised and studied for the selective detection of Co2+ ions. With exceptional selectivity over other metal ions that are relevant to biology and the environment, the sensor displays a clear “turn-o...
