Sustainable Offshore Energy Operations in Europe: Leveraging AI for Resilient Supply Chains and Asset Management
Abstract
Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming offshore energy operations by enhancing operational efficiency, safety, environmental stewardship, and supply chain resilience. As Europe has accelerated its transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy system, the integration of intelligent digital technologies across offshore oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors has become increasingly important. This review critically examines the application of artificial intelligence in sustainable offshore energy operations, with particular emphasis on predictive maintenance; demand forecasting; inventory management; transportation and logistics optimisation; real-time monitoring; digital twins; and health, safety, and environmental management. Relevant evidence was synthesised through a structured review of peer-reviewed literature and authoritative industry publications, with findings organised via a thematic analytical approach. This review demonstrates that artificial intelligence enables more proactive asset management, improves maintenance planning, enhances logistics coordination, strengthens operational decision-making, and supports environmental monitoring through real-time data analytics and autonomous systems. However, challenges related to data quality, cybersecurity, interoperability, workforce capability, regulatory uncertainty, and implementation costs continue to constrain widespread deployment. The study highlights the importance of integrating artificial intelligence with digital infrastructure and organisational capabilities to maximise operational value and sustainability outcomes. This study concludes by identifying key research priorities and practical considerations that can support the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in Europe's evolving offshore energy sector.
