TL;DR

This work presents the first streaming algorithm for computing an $\varepsilon$-coreset for continuous $k$-median clustering under the Hamming distance, and can be implemented in streaming, requiring only $\tilde{O}_\varepsilon(\ell k + k^2)$ space.

Abstract

Clustering is one of the most fundamental tools in data analysis, allowing large datasets to be summarized by a small number of representative points. Given a metric space $(\mathcal{X}, \mathbb{d})$ and a set $S$ of $n$ points in this space, the continuous $k$-median clustering problem asks to find a set $C$ of $k$ points that minimizes the objective function $\sum_{s\in S} \mathbb{d}(s,C)$. When $\mathcal{X} = \Sigma^\ell$ is the set of strings of length $\ell$ and $\mathbb{d}$ is the Hamming distance, the continuous $k$-median clustering problem is known to be W[1]-hard when parameterized by $k$. In this work, we present the first $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm for this problem with FPT runtime $2^{\mathrm{poly}(\varepsilon^{-1},k)} \cdot n\ell \mathrm{polylog} \; n$. An additional feature of the algorithm is that it can be implemented in streaming, requiring only $\tilde{O}_\varepsilon(\ell k + k^2)$ space. As an auxiliary tool of independent interest, we show the first streaming algorithm for computing an $\varepsilon$-coreset for continuous $k$-median clustering under the Hamming

Streaming algorithms for robust max-min diversification

Given a set of $n$ points $X$ in a metric space and an integer $k$, max-min diversification aims to select $k$ points of $X$ maximizing their minimum pairwise distance. This objective function is however highly vulnerable to noisy points. In[Amagata, AAAI23], a robust formulation is proposed which addresses this vulner...

The threshold for fractional clique decompositions of random hypergraphs, via matrix scaling

Let $\delta^*_{k,r}$ be the fractional $K_r^{(k)}$-decomposition threshold in minimum codegree. For fixed $k\ge2$, $r\ge k+1$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we prove that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with minimum codegree at least $(\delta^*_{k,r}+\varepsilon)n$ admits, with high probability, a fractional $K_r^{(k...

Weak $k$-metric dimension of Hamming graphs: rectangular products and near-maximum parameters

We determine weak $k$-metric dimensions for several families of Hamming graphs. For $n\ge3$, $m>n$, and $3\le k\le2n$, a cyclic construction proves Conjecture 6.1 of Fern\'andez, Klav\v{z}ar, Kuziak, Mu\~noz-M\'arquez and Yero (2026) on $K_n\square K_m$. For these rectangular products, we also prove that $\operatorname...
