TL;DR

Early screening for children with these risk factors can facilitate early intervention for those at most risk for poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes, and can facilitate early intervention for those at most risk for poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Abstract

Objective

Explore the association of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal risk factors with autism risk at 5-years corrected age in very preterm (VPT) children. STUDY

Design

Data from a longitudinal cohort study of 315 VPT and 172 term-born children at a US-based academic medical center were analyzed, exploring antecedents of autism risk using elastic net regression.

Results

More children born VPT (8.9%) had a Social Communication Questionnaire score associated with autism (i.e., SCQ ≥ 15) than term-born controls (2.9%; p = 0.012). For VPT children, cerebellar abnormalities at term-equivalent age (OR = 1.339, 95% CI = 1.010–1.778) and moderate-severe histologic chorioamnionitis (OR = 4.148, CI = 1.294–13.368) were significantly associated with autism risk, in addition to male sex and social risk. VPT children with SCQ ≥ 15 had poorer adaptive, behavioral, cognitive, and executive functioning (all ps < 0.001).

Conclusion

Early screening for children with these risk factors can facilitate early intervention for those at most risk for poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Development of Perinatal Social Determinants of Health Composite Risk Score in Infants Born Preterm.

OBJECTIVE To develop and validate a perinatal social determinant of health (SDoH) risk score for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants born preterm. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study of 395 infants born at ≤32 weeks' gestation recruited from 5 level III/IV NICUs in Greater Cincinnati (2016-2019); 328...

Psychotic-like experiences in children born very preterm: evidence from clinical and population-based cohorts

VPT birth is associated with increased vulnerability to PLEs in childhood, particularly in the domain of perceptual abnormalities, which may reflect differences in the composition of its VPT subgroup, which may not fully represent VPT individuals typically seen in clinical cohorts.

Anxiety and mood disorders from childhood to adulthood in very preterm and term-born individuals.

BACKGROUND Very preterm (VP) birth has been associated with higher rates of anxiety and mood disorders, but the emergence and persistence from childhood to adulthood is unknown. This study examined prevalence rates and early risk factors of these disorders in VP and term-born individuals. METHODS In a prospective sam...

Neurodevelopment at 2 years in children born very preterm in 2001-2018.

INTRODUCTION More active approach and increased survival rates of very preterm infants have raised concerns about their long-term neurodevelopment, especially regarding the cognitive outcome. METHODS We included very preterm infants (gestational age <32 weeks and/or with birth weight ≤ 1500 g) born in 2001-2018 and a...
