TL;DR

This study represents the first comprehensive report of the fungal pathogens associated with root rot of S. bungeana in China and provides the first evidence that C. spicifera and M. bolleyi are the predominant and most virulent pathogens associated with root rot of Stipa species.

Abstract

Stipa bungeana Trin. is a dominant grass species in the warm temperate steppes of northern China; however, its root rot diseases have not been systematically investigated. In this study, 100 root samples of S. bungeana showing typical root rot symptoms were collected from the Sha’erqin Research Base in Tumd Left Banner, Hohhot City, Inner Mongolia, China. A total of 76 fungal isolates, were recovered and identified based on morphological characteristics and multi-locus sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) gene. Eight species were identified, of which Curvularia spicifera (25 isolates, 32.89%) and Microdochium bolleyi (24 isolates, 31.58%) were the predominant species. Pathogenicity tests conducted on healthy S. bungeana seedlings under greenhouse conditions demonstrated that all 8 species induced root rot symptoms, thereby, fulfilling Koch’s postulates. Notably, C. spicifera and M. bolleyi exhibited significantly greater virulence than the Fusarium species and the other recovered fungi, resulting in higher disease incidence and plant mortality. This study represents the first comprehensive report of the fungal pathogens associated with root rot of S. bungeana in China and provides the first evidence that C. spicifera and M. bolleyi are the predominant and most virulent pathogens associated with root rot of Stipa species. These findings fill an important critical knowledge gap in grassland plant pathology and provide a scientific foundation for disease management in natural steppe ecosystems.

Phytopythium helicoides Associated with Root Rot of Sweet Cherry in Chile: Identification, Pathogenicity, and Incidence of Decline Symptoms

Species within the genus Phytopythium have recently been recognized as significant soilborne pathogens impacting various crops globally. However, their occurrence and pathogenicity in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) have not been studied in Chile before. This study aimed to identify Phytopythium isolates associated with ro...

Isolation, identification, and genomic analysis of Fusarium verticillioides CMGF-RB13 causing strawberry root rot

Strawberry root rot is a serious soil-borne root disease with a high incidence rate that is extremely difficult to control. To identify the fungal pathogens responsible for strawberry root rot, diseased plants exhibiting root rot symptoms were collected from Jining, Shandong Province, China. Strain CMGF-RB13 was isol...

First occurrence of Corynespora cassiicola infecting chia plant in Bangladesh and sensitivity of the pathogen to selected fungicides

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is an emerging crop in Bangladesh valued for its medicinal properties and economic significance. In March 2024, target spot-like symptoms were observed in an experimental chia field (24.75° N, 90.50° E) at Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, with disease incidence ra...

Isolation, identification, and in vitro biological control of fungi causing root rot and seedling death of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.)

Root rot and seedling death are among the most destructive diseases of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) in central Iraq. This study isolated and identified the fungal pathogens associated with these symptoms on okra in Karbala Province and assessed their in vitro biological control using Trichoderma harzianum. Fungi we...
