Analysis of the Impact of Current Transformer Polarity on the Performance of Directional Protection Elements in Protective Relays

Abstract

This paper demonstrates that the polarity of the current transformer (CT) is a critical determinant of directional overcurrent protection selectivity. Analytical modeling and hardware-in-loop testing confirm that a reversed CT polarity introduces a predictable 180° phase shift in the measured current. This phase inversion corrupts the directional element’s torque calculation, resulting in nondiscriminative relay behavior: failure to trip for internal faults and spurious tripping for external faults. These polarity-induced errors remain latent under steady-state conditions and manifest only during fault events, precisely when protection must perform reliably. The findings highlight the necessity of incorporating CT polarity verification into commissioning, routine maintenance, and compliance audits. They further emphasize that digital relay performance is fundamentally dependent on the integrity of its analog inputs.

Possibilities of increasing the sensitivity of current backup protection in symmetrical modes

This paper examines the problem of increasing the sensitivity of backup protection systems, specifically long-range backup protection systems (LRPS), at 110-220 kV branch substations (BSS) with relatively low-power power trans-formers (6.3-16 MVA). Short-circuit currents (SC) during faults on the low-voltage (LV) side...

Multi-Method Transformer Diagnostics for Root Cause Analysis of Tap Changer Faults

Measuring a transformer tap changer is an important part of transformer diagnostic testing, as it enables the assessment of contact transition resistance, the condition of contact elements, and the potential impact of contamination on switching reliability. The paper presents practical diagnostic cases in which an unus...

Enhancement of Renewable Power System Protection Reliability Using a Superconducting Fault Current Limiting Circuit Breaker (SFCL-CB)

The proliferation of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and energy storage systems in power grids has led to a decline in the short-circuit ratio (SCR) and reduced fault current magnitudes, compromising the reliability of conventional overcurrent relays (OCRs) and creating protection blind zones. To resolve these vulnerab...

Design and application of an intermediate-relay based full-bay I/O simulator for 220 kV substation protection and scada testing

The modernization of power systems necessitates rigorous full-circuit testing prior to equipment commissioning. At 220 kV substations, these testing procedures are frequently hindered by the construction progress of primary equipment and stringent power outage schedules. This paper proposes a design solution for a full...
