Implications of educational technology: A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited studies over twenty years

Abstract

Educational technology (ET) plays an important role in improving student learning experiences, yet no prior study has systematically examined research trends among its most influential publications. This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles on ET published between 2005 and 2024, drawn from the Scopus database. Results show that articles published in 2020 received the highest total citations, with the USA, Taiwan, and Australia as the most productive countries and Computers and Education as the leading source journal. Analysis of the top 20 most-cited articles identified three themes: interactive learning environments, the role of digital technologies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ET use. Keyword co-occurrence analysis further revealed four emerging research clusters spanning technology acceptance, learning-process monitoring, distance-learning pedagogy, and post-pandemic online/blended learning models. Co-citation analysis showed that researchers most frequently drew on studies addressing individual learner characteristics and technology acceptance frameworks (TAM/UTAUT). These findings offer researchers and practitioners a consolidated overview of the field’s most impactful contributions and emerging directions.

A decade of research on technology-mediated English language proficiency enhancement: A bibliometric analysis

Background and Purpose: This bibliometric analysis study provides a detailed analysis of the landscape of research on technology-mediated English language skills teaching and learning over the past decade. The goal is to shed light on the most popular subjects, prolific authors, publications, and countries involved. By examining 209 documents retrieved from the Scopus database from 2014-2023, this study aims to reveal significant trends and insights into the evolution of technology-mediated teaching and learning processes. Methodology: The study utilises bibliometric analysis, with data collection conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. It employed tools such as VOSviewer, Excel, and Tableau. The research involves quantitative metrics to graphically represent publication trends, country contributions and collaborations, prolific authors, and recurring research themes. Findings: The analysis shows a significant rise in technology-mediated English language teaching publications since 2021, led by the United States, China, and Malaysia. Key topics include e-learning, communication skills, computer-assisted teaching, pandemic's impact, speech recognition, and teaching, highlighting central themes and collaborative networks. Contributions: It highlights critical trends and areas of focus in technology-mediated English language education. It underscores the importance of prioritising research on technological media in language education and suggests future research directions to enhance English language proficiency, particularly speaking skills. Gamification and Flipped Classroom Research: A Bibliometric Analysis of Trends of Scopus-Indexed Publications

This study examined 325 scientific articles from Scopus on gamification research within flipped classroom and technology-enhanced learning contexts. The study aimed to identify publication trends, research productivity, and emerging thematic patterns in this field. Bibliometric analysis and systematic mapping are lacking, making it difficult to understand research trends, collaboration patterns, and key themes. A bibliometric approach was employed to map trends in scientific publications. Data were collected using the Scopus database, applying Boolean operators. The selection criteria included questions about elementary, middle, and high school students and publications published between 2014 and 2024. Data analysis was carried out using VOSviewer and Bibliometrix. The findings revealed a clear increase in global research activity, with substantial growth in annual publication output. Keyword analysis revealed six interrelated research trends: New Ways of Teaching, Psychological Dimensions and Learner Engagement, Technology Drivers and Digital Environments, Implementation Context: Learning Environment and Curriculum, Evaluation of Goals and Developing Competencies, and Methods for Studies in Education. Gamification literature grew by 169 papers between 2014 and 2021. Although productivity grew between 2021 and 2024, the total number of papers was 156. This study shows that pedagogy, psychology, and technology are interconnected. It can help teachers and policymakers use gamification and AI- and Virtual Reality-enhanced teaching methods. This study emphasizes the integration of pedagogy, psychology, and technology in a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. The findings can help educators and policymakers develop new pedagogical methods, particularly using Artificial Intelligence and VR. Keywords: bibliometric analysis, flipped classroom, digital learning, gamification, and innovative classroom.

Technological pedagogical content knowledge in science education: A scientometric review

This study presents one of the first scientometric reviews of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) in science education. The review highlights how teachers’ digital pedagogical knowledge has been conceptualised and evolved to support learner-content, learner-teacher, and learner-technology interaction in science education. The analysis drew on 564 bibliographic records from the Web of Science from 2014 to 2024. Quantitative methods were applied to capture publication growth, citation impact, contributions from countries, institutions, journals and authors, and thematic development. Data analysis included network analysis, polynomial regression, least squares trend analysis, and Chi-square tests. Bradford’s and Lotka’s laws were applied to assess journal and author productivity. Science mapping tools supported visualization, including VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, and the Bibliometrix R package. Advanced statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package for the social sciences. The results show accelerated growth in TPACK publications after 2018, with output peaking between 2020 and 2022 as pandemic-driven demands increased the use of educational technologies. China, the United States, and Turkey emerged as the leading contributors, while Nanyang Technological University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong dominated institutional output. Chai Ching Sing was found to be the most prolific author. Author productivity revealed that TPACK scholarship in science education is dominated by one-time contributors supported by a small core of active scholars. Thematic evolution reveals a shift from knowledge integration toward teacher education and professional development, with recent expansion into mathematics and science education.

A DECADE OF SCIENCE EDUCATION RESEARCH IN INDONESIA: TRENDS, LEARNING MODELS, AND STUDENT OUTCOMES

Purpose – This study aims to identify the most frequently examined learning models in science education research in Indonesia, map the most commonly studied learning outcomes, and analyze the patterns of relationships between the two.Methodology – This study employs an SLR  design following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data retrieval was conducted via the Scopus database using the Publish or Perish application, covering the timeframe 2016–2025. Of the total 509 identified articles, 57 empirical studies were selected based on strict inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using thematic synthesis to map the frequencies of models and outcomes, and to identify emerging patterns of relationships.Findings –The results indicate that IBL is the most frequently studied model (28 studies), followed by PBL and PjBL. The most commonly examined outcomes are critical thinking skills (21%), science process skills (17.5%), and academic learning outcomes. Relationship patterns fall into three configurations: one-to-many, many-to-one, and exclusive. Trends for 2024–2025 indicate a shift toward more holistic outcomes such as computational thinking, teachers’ pedagogical competencies, and reflective skills. This shift can be linked to the dynamics of the Merdeka Curriculum, the strengthening of project-based learning, and the demands of 21st-century competencies.Contribution – The dominance of the IBL model and the focus on critical thinking skills as learning outcomes reflect methodological convenience and alignment with curriculum policy rather than pedagogical superiority alone, with significant gaps remaining in non-dominant models (Cooperative Learning, Discovery Learning, ADDIE, Susan Loucks-Horsley) and non-cognitive learning outcomes. This study contributes theoretically through a relational model–outcome mapping framework that reveals one-to-many, many-to-one, and exclusive patterns, and practically by providing a basis for educators to select learning models and a roadmap for future research agendas.
