Abstract
Purpose: Digital transformation has become a strategic imperative for organizations seeking to enhance competitiveness and adaptability in dynamic digital environments. Despite extensive scholarly attention, many digital transformation initiatives fail due to the lack of integrated frameworks that systematically consolidate critical success factors (CSFs). The purpose of this study is to identify and synthesize the most influential CSFs of digital transformation and to propose a comprehensive, phase-based model that addresses this gap in existing literature.Design/methodology/approach: The study employs a PRISMA-guided structured conceptual systematic review to ensure methodological transparency and consistency in the identification and synthesis of relevant studies. A total of 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers published between 2010 and 2024 were selected using explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria focused on digital transformation and CSFs. The selected studies were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns, relationships, and dominant success factors across multiple industries.Findings: The findings indicate that leadership commitment and strategic alignment are the most consistently cited critical success factors (CSFs)for successful digital transformation.The analysis further reveals that the relevance of these factors evolves across transformation phases, demonstrating phase-specific salience and dynamic interaction among strategic, technological, organizational, and regulatory dimensions. Additional key factors include technological readiness, user-centric design, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. Based on these findings, the study proposes the Comprehensive digital transformation Success Model (CDTSM), which integrates these CSFs into a structured framework encompassing the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and sustainability phases of digital transformationResearch limitations/implications: This study is conceptual and based on a structured systematic literature review of existing scholarly work. Although the review follows PRISMA-guided procedures to ensure transparency, the proposed model remains theoretically grounded and requires empirical validation across different organizational and industry contexts.Practical implications: The proposed model offers a structured and actionable guide for managers and decision-makers to systematically plan, implement, and sustain digital transformation initiatives. By emphasizing strategic alignment, leadership commitment, and regulatory considerations, the model supports organizations in reducing transformation risks and improving implementation outcomes.Social Implications: Being aware of main critical factors in digital transformation at firms can facilitate the change in the way human resources collaborate and socialize in firm’s teams and networks.Originality/value: This study contributes to the digital transformation literature by consolidating fragmented critical success factors (CSFs)into a single, coherent, and holistic model. The CDTSM extends existing frameworks by integrating technological, organizational, human, and regulatory dimensions,and introduces a lifecycle-oriented and temporally structured perspective that explains how critical success factors (CSFs)factors evolve and interact across distinct transformation phases, extending RBV, Dynamic Capabilities, and TOE-based models. thereby providing both theoretical advancement and practical value for organizations navigating complex digital transformation processes.
The findings provide an integrated overview of current scientific knowledge and highlight gaps in research across different industries and levels of analysis, suggesting future studies should explore less digitally advanced sectors and include individual, unit, and organizational level perspectives.

The purpose of this systematic literature review is to extract and synthesize findings of research papers published in high-quality journals to address our specific research questions, find gaps and propose future research agendas. We want to understand the mechanisms by which digital innovation adoption (DIA) and digital transformation (DT) help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) achieve competitive advantage and enhance operational performance, ultimately leading to sustainable competitive advantage (SCA).
Fifty-nine studies were selected following the extended PRISMA guidelines as the methodological framework.
Four key themes have been generated based on thematic analysis of selected studies, which further helped us to find research gaps, implications and future research scopes.
DIA can enhance competitive advantage by business model innovation, strategic agility, resilience and foundational organizational capabilities in SMEs. Also, improve operational performance by process management, supply chain optimization and increasing employee productivity. Also, marketing orientation has been used as a complementary lens along with strategic and operational perspectives. The existing literature has not extensively addressed how these viewpoints can be integrated to create an SCA for SMEs. To address this gap, we developed an integrated conceptual framework with the help of key findings and propositions that emerged from the selected studies. We concluded the study by providing propositions for future empirical testing.

Digital transformation in the public sector is a complex and multidimensional change process in which leadership plays a central yet insufficiently mapped role in the literature. This study aims to systematically review the literature on leadership in public sector digital transformation to identify dominant leadership roles, success factors, and barriers. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach based on the Scopus database with PRISMA selection flow, this study examined 33 articles from 398 initial records published between 2015 and 2025. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer to map research trends and clusters. The results reveal three main findings: (1) transformational, digital, and strategic leadership are the most dominant roles, forming a complementary triad model; (2) organizational culture, digital capability, and stakeholder engagement are the key determinants of transformation success; and (3) institutional-bureaucratic barriers, leadership capability gaps, and human resource resistance are the most critical challenges. This study concludes that the success of digital transformation in the public sector is not determined by technology investment alone, but by leadership maturity that integrates strategic vision, organizational agility, and public value simultaneously.

The purpose of this study is to advance knowledge for managers, policymakers, and researchers regarding the important key factors of successful Digital Transformation (DT) adoption, which can shed light on research gaps and help form a research agenda. A systematic literature review was conducted to analyse 26 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025 from the Scopus, Emerald, Insight, Google Scholar, and ProQuest databases, following the PRISMA guidelines. Four DT adoption models, such as Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Task-Technology Fit (TTF), and Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), have been analysed to understand why people embrace DT either positively or negatively. According to the literature, the success factors for adopting DT have been identified. In addition, it is found that using only one DT adoption model does not ensure success. It is advisable to use an integrated multi-model or multiple frameworks for the theoretical adoption of DT. Using multiple frameworks makes DT adoption easier to understand. The Input-Process Output (IPO) schema allows consolidating the gaps in the present state and setting out the research agenda. The IPO schema can be considered a helpful tool for identifying research gaps and setting the research agenda, as well as for planning, decision-making, and policymaking.
