Educational Aspirations in Contemporary Indian Education: A Critical Conceptual Synthesis for Holistic Learner Development

Aug 2026 · Asian Journal of Education and Social Studies · Vol 52, pp. 507-529 · 0 citations

Abstract

Educational aspirations occupy an ambiguous place in contemporary education. They can orient effort, identity and choice, yet they are also shaped by social position, institutional opportunity and knowledge of attainable pathways. In India, this ambiguity is especially consequential because rapid educational expansion and policy commitments to holistic learning coexist with persistent inequalities by caste, tribe, gender, household resources, geography, language and institutional sector. This critical narrative review develops an integrated conceptual account of educational aspirations as part of holistic learner development rather than as a stand-alone motivational trait. Literature published from 1 January 2000 to 9 June 2026 was prioritised, with selected foundational studies included where necessary. The synthesis connects motivational and career theories with capability-oriented and development-economic accounts of aspirations, alongside India-focused evidence on families, schooling, social identity, labour-market signals, mobility constraints and higher-education pathways. The evidence indicates that aspirations are best understood as desired futures embedded in a conversion ecology: expectations, self-efficacy, agency, belonging and engagement interact with material resources, role models, institutional quality, guidance, transport, affordability and credible educational routes. High aspirations alone do not reliably produce attainment. Both very narrow horizons and poorly supported aspiration gaps can weaken conversion into sustained learning, whereas realistic but expandable pathways appear more productive. For holistic learner development, schools should therefore support not only ambition but also autonomy, competence, relatedness, socio-emotional resources, cultural and creative development, career knowledge and the practical means to pursue valued futures. The review proposes an aspiration-capability perspective for Indian education and identifies priorities for longitudinal, intersectional and intervention research that can distinguish aspiration formation from aspiration conversion. Educational policy is most defensible when it expands both the range of valued futures learners can imagine and their substantive freedom to pursue them.
