Multilocus, morphological, and ecological data reveal the presence of three new species of the genus Neodiplostomum Railliet 1919 (Digenea: Diplostomidae), endoparasites of birds from the Neotropical region of Mexico
Three new species of Neodiplostomum are recognised herein as three new species that showed morphometric differences in the body size, prosoma, opisthosoma, suckers, holdfast organ, testes, ovaries, and eggs.
Abstract
Abstract Neodiplostomum Railliet, 1919, is a cosmopolitan genus that parasitises mainly the intestines of birds of prey, and occasionally those of passerines, cuculiforms, and mammals. Adults of three undescribed species of Neodiplostomum were obtained from five bird species from three families (Accipitridae, Cuculidae, and Tyrannidae) in a single locality. Four molecular markers, namely, the small (SSU) and large (LSU) subunits and internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2 plus 5.8S) from nuclear ribosomal DNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) from mitochondrial DNA, were sequenced from specimens of the three species. The newly obtained sequences were aligned with other sequences of Neodiplostomum spp. downloaded from GenBank. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses based on each molecular marker revealed that the specimens of the three undescribed species of Neodiplostomum formed three independent lineages with high values of genetic divergence; thus, they are recognised herein as three new species: Neodiplostomum acatlotlii n. sp., N. papaloapanensis n. sp., and N. leoni n. sp. The new species showed morphometric differences in the body size, prosoma, opisthosoma, suckers, holdfast organ, testes, ovaries, and eggs. Our study also revealed that the three new species are distributed sympatrically in the Veracruzan biogeographical province in the Neotropical region of Mexico and use different ways of transmission to complete their life cycles.
Abstract Using an integrative taxonomic approach, we describe two new species of Monopisthocotyla, Mymarothecioides leporini n. sp. and Mymarothecioides paranaensis n. sp., parasitising the gills of anostomid fishes from the Jaguaribe River and Paraná River basins, Brazil. These descriptions represent the first record...

Within the family Rhodomelaceae several taxa exhibit significant cryptic diversity and high phenotypic plasticity, requiring the employment of molecular data for the accurate delimitation of genera and species. Among these, the genus Polysiphonia sensu lato has been demonstrated to be polyphyletic, and several new gene...

Drepanothrix Sars, 1862 is a monotypic genus of uncertain position within the family Macrothricidae (Cladocera: Anomopoda). Gamogenetic stages of Drepanothrix are poorly described despite the importance of their characters for anomopod systematics. Drepanothrix dentata (Eurén, 1861) is widespread in the Holarctic, but...

Molecular data of the copepod is provided for the first time, including sequences from the type host, A. probatocephalus, and a phylogenetic tree was built that yielded L. tylosuri as a sister group of L. caudatus.

The phylogenetic position of Pacificampa remains unclear, but the present phylogeny based on the 18S rRNA gene indicates a close relationship between Pacificampa and the campodeid genus Metriocampa Silvestri, 1911 and suggests the non-monophyly of the subfamily Campodeinae.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequences were determined for three species of gobioid fishes, namely Stapledon atropurpureus, Stapledon elegans, and Stapledon semoni, which suggest they have been subject to purifying selection.
