SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND THE PERFORMANCE OF MICRO, SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (MSMEs) IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The number of rival companies expanding both locally and globally, companies not only have to reestablish themselves to produce higher-quality products and services, decrease waste and are able to respond to the market but also to handle their supply chain management efficiently. The main objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between supply chain management practices and the performance MSMEs in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design in order to collect relevant data from respondents in the field comprising the target respondents who are employees of MSMEs in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The population of this study comprised of 1,120 MSMEs in Nasarawa State and sample size of 354 MSMEs. Purposive sampling technique was utilized to administer the questionnaire to the respondents. 354 structured questionnaires were distributed but 321 were returned representing 91% retrieval rate. This study adopted multiple linear regression analysis facilitated SmartPLS version (v) 4.1.1.6. The results of this study revealed that strategic supplier partnership had a significant effect on the performance of MSMEs. The findings showed that customer relationship management has a significant effect on the performance of MSMEs. MSMEs should identify their top 3-5 critical suppliers and establish formal partnership agreements that include quarterly joint planning sessions, shared performance metrics, collaborative cost reduction initiatives, and joint innovation projects. MSMEs should invest in an affordable CRM platform (such as HubSpot, Zoho, or Salesforce Essentials) and establish systematic customer engagement practices including monthly check-in calls with key accounts, quarterly satisfaction surveys, personalized communication based on purchase history, and a formal customer feedback loop that informs product/service improvements.

Green supplier selection and flexible sourcing: An empirical study of Nigeria tertiary institution

Continued use of traditional procurement method hampers the adoption of innovative, and sustainable procurement practices capable of enhancing operational efficiency and long-term institutional performance. This research investigate the relationship between Green Supplier Selection (GSS) and flexible sourcing practices (FSP) in Nigeria Maritime University, South -South Region. The total population of the study comprised of 1,252 employees, using taro Yamane formula to determine a sample size of 303 employees. A descriptive survey research design was employed in the research, and a stratified random sampling technique was applied in the distribution of the survey to the participants including- procurement officers, internal auditors, logistics managers, administrative staff, and heads of departments. Copies of 303 questionnaires were distributed out of which 281 were returned, while the remaining 22 were not returned and utilized for the study. Both descriptive, inferential statistics, and Pearson correlation techniques were utilized in testing hypotheses to determine the relationships between the variables. The findings indicates a high association between green supplier selection (GSS) and flexible sourcing (FLS) based on responses from the participants. The study recommends university management to prioritize local sourcing and encourage investments in indigenous manufacturing firms to reduce dependence on foreign products such as office equipment and machines.

Supply Chain Management Practices, Innovation and Sustainability Performance Among Manufacturing Firms in North Rift Region

This study examined the moderating role of innovation in the relationship between supply chain management practices and sustainability performance among manufacturing firms in the North Rift Region of Kenya. The study focused on lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices. An explanatory cross-sectional research design was adopted. The target population comprised 500 senior, middle and lower-level managers from manufacturing firms operating in the region. A sample of 222 respondents was selected through stratified random sampling, and 207 completed questionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 93.2%. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, multiple regression and hierarchical moderation analysis. The findings showed that firm sustainability performance had a mean score of 3.9855, while lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices and innovation had mean scores of 4.0491, 3.7005, 3.8068 and 3.4839, respectively. Reliability coefficients ranged from 0.751 to 0.898, indicating acceptable internal consistency. Regression results showed that lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices had positive and significant effects on sustainability performance. Innovation also had a positive and significant direct effect and strengthened each practice-performance relationship. The final model explained 90.8% of the variance in sustainability performance. The study concludes that manufacturing firms may achieve stronger sustainability outcomes when supply chain practices are supported by innovation capabilities.

Digital Supply Chain Practices and Performance of Logistics Companies in Nairobi City County, Kenya

This study examined the influence of digital supply chain practices on the performance of logistics firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya, focusing on the effects of information technology, warehousing technology, transportation technology, and distribution technology on operational efficiency. Guided by Transaction Cost Economics Theory, the Technology Acceptance Model, and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the study adopted a descriptive research design targeting 1,248 KIFWA-registered logistics firms, from which a sample of 303 firms was drawn using Yamane’s (1967) formula and stratified random sampling. Data were collected using structured electronic questionnaires, achieving a reliability coefficient of Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.841 and a 73% response rate (221 respondents). The findings established that all four digital supply chain dimensions positively and significantly influence operational efficiency, with the regression model confirming strong explanatory power (R2 = 0.623, F(4,216) = 89.14, p < .001). Information technology emerged as the most influential predictor (β = 0.387), followed by warehousing technology (β = 0.352), distribution technology (β = 0.318), and transportation technology (β = 0.281). The study concludes that digital supply chain practices are critical drivers of operational efficiency and competitive performance among logistics firms in Nairobi. The findings imply that firms that invest in integrated information systems, warehouse automation, and advanced distribution technologies achieve higher efficiency, improved service delivery, and stronger market responsiveness. Policy and managerial implications highlight the need for stronger investment in digital infrastructure, targeted capacity building, and supportive regulatory frameworks that encourage technology adoption. Logistics managers are further encouraged to prioritize system integration, employee upskilling, cybersecurity, and change management to ensure effective utilization of digital tools. Collectively, these measures will enhance operational resilience, reduce transaction costs, and strengthen the long-term competitiveness of logistics firms within Nairobi’s evolving supply chain environment.

The Impact of Green Supply Chain Management on Organizational Sustainability in the Libyan Manufacturing Sector: The Mediating Role of Technological Innovation and Environmental Performance

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of green supply chain management on organizational sustainability, where technology innovation and environmental performance are taken as mediating factors. The focus of this study was on the increasing need for better protection of the environment and the increasing demands of the sustainable development of industries, especially in developing countries, where there are limited empirical data available on sustainability activities. The collected sample comprised 387 managers and technologists from Libyan manufacturing companies using a survey instrument and a stratified random sampling technique. Validity scales were used, and the measurements were done using the five-point Likert scale. The data analysis involved the use of PLS-SEM, where SmartPLS 4.0 was used. It entailed the analysis of the measurement model as well as the structural model, with the bootstrapping being done for 5000 samples. The findings show that GSCM significantly affects the OS. Specifically, it has a positive impact on environmental performance (EP) and technological innovation (TI), which, in turn, enhance the OS. Among the mediating factors, the EP was found to be the strongest predictor and mediator of the OS, followed by TI. The developed model proved to have a high explanatory power, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.660. Thus, the integration of GSCM with innovation and environmental activities can lead to the successful achievement of sustainability objectives among manufacturing enterprises. The study’s limitations are associated with its cross-sectional design and its focus on managers. Future research could employ longitudinal designs and examine other contexts, such as digital transformation, the institutional environment, and the organizational culture.

Sustainable Supply Chain Management Practices and Organizational Performance of Beverage Manufacturing Firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya

Purpose: The general objective of the study is to establish the effect of sustainable supply chain management practices on the performance of beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Specifically, the study sought to establish the influence of ethical sourcing and green purchasing on the performance of beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Methodology: This study was guided by Stakeholder Theory and Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory. According to KAM report (2023), there are o 321 beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The unit of analysis in this study was therefore 321 beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya while the unit of observation was procurement managers and supply chain managers. In each company, the study targeted 1 procurement manager and 1 supply chain managers. The total target population was therefore 642 management employees. The study used Yamane (1967) formula to determine the size of the sample. From the formula, the sample size was 246 respondents. This research used a questionnaire to collect primary data. This research used a questionnaire to collect primary data. The pilot study was carried out on 24 respondents. SPSS was used to analyze the data collected from the field. Quantitative data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques. Pearson R correlation was used to measure strength and the direction of linear relationship between variables. The study results were presented through use of tables and figures. Findings: The study found that ethical sourcing has a positive and significant influence on performance of beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. In addition, the study found that green purchasing has a positive and significant influence on performance of beverage manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Based on the findings, the study recommends that beverage manufacturing firms in Kenya should adopt green purchasing practices by prioritizing suppliers who provide environmentally friendly raw materials, recyclable packaging, and energy-efficient inputs, while also integrating environmental criteria into supplier selection and evaluation processes.

Green Supply Chain Management and Firm Performance in Pakistan's Textile Industry

Purpose: This study investigates the impact of four green supply chain management (GSCM) practices—eco-design, green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution—on firm performance, while examining the mediating role of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) among manufacturing firms in Pakistan's textile industry. Approach: Grounded in a positivist research philosophy, the study adopts a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected through a structured, five-point Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 150 managers, supervisors, and supply chain professionals working in textile manufacturing firms located in Faisalabad, Sheikhupura, and Multan, using a convenience sampling technique. Data were analysed using SPSS for descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and Pearson correlation, and AMOS for confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modelling (SEM), and bootstrapped mediation testing. Findings: The measurement model demonstrated sound reliability (overall Cronbach's α = .913) and adequate sampling adequacy (KMO = .843, Bartlett's test significant, p < .001). Eco-design (β = .410), green procurement (β = .194), green manufacturing (β = .191), and green distribution (β = .165) each exerted a significant positive effect on firm performance, and SSCM itself was a strong positive predictor of firm performance (β = .678). However, SSCM significantly mediated only the relationship between eco-design and firm performance (β = .329, p < .001); its mediating role in the relationships involving green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution was not statistically supported. Contributions: The study extends the Resource-Based View by demonstrating that GSCM practices function as valuable, rare, and difficult-to-imitate resources that translate into performance gains, partly through sustainable supply chain capabilities. Textile manufacturers should prioritize eco-design initiatives and strengthen the sustainable supply chain infrastructure required to convert broader green practices into measurable performance outcomes. Originality value: This is among the first studies to empirically test SSCM as a mediating mechanism between multiple GSCM dimensions and firm performance within Pakistan's textile sector, an emerging-economy context where such evidence remains scarce.
