TL;DR

These findings uncover an active, centrosome-dependent, cell-autonomous mechanism for maintaining and repairing mature metazoan cilia in fully grown organs in adulthood and also provide a possible explanation for how deregulation of conserved ciliary base components could lead to progressive, late-onset cilia-related disorders.

The microtubule-associated proteins CKAP2 and its paralog CKAP2- Like control ciliogenesis in human cells

Ciliogenesis is an evolutionarily conserved process that leads to the assembly of cilia. This process relies on microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) to regulate axonemal microtubule dynamics. Misregulation of MAPs often leads to changes in ciliary homeostasis, contributing to numerous ciliopathies. Although CKAP2 and...

Tekt2 regulates hair cell development and function by maintaining normal kinocilium morphology in zebrafish

Background Sensory hair cells (HCs) rely on a highly polarized apical apparatus, composed of actin-rich stereocilia and a microtubule-based kinocilium, to detect mechanical stimuli. Although tektins are conserved microtubule-associated proteins enriched in cilia and flagella, their roles in sensory HC morphogenesis and...

The dynamics of ciliogenesis in prepubertal mouse meiosis reveals new clues about testis maturation

The dynamics of ciliogenesis during mouse puberty are investigated and it is shown that primary cilia are not an intrinsic feature of spermatocytes during the first wave of meiosis, initiated at 8 days post partum (dpp).

Stereotypical interciliary contacts in a C. elegans sense organ

Investigating how primary cilia, structures that detect and transmit signals, form contacts with one another in a head sensory organ of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans found that these contacts follow consistent patterns and can form even when neighboring cilia are absent, suggesting they are actively established r...

CFAP100 forms phase-separated condensates required for ciliary transition zone assembly

Cilia are microtubule-based cellular protrusions critical for cell signaling and motility. The ciliary transition zone connects axonemal microtubules to the ciliary membrane and functions as a gatekeeper by regulating selective targeting and sorting of proteins. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its assembly...
