Reconstructing the Concept of Khilāfah through Muhammad Abed al-Jabiri's Bayānī and Burhānī Epistemology: Insights for Contemporary Indonesia
The resurgence of khilāfah discourse in Indonesia has intensified debates over the legitimacy of political authority in Islam, with several movements advocating the establishment of a universal caliphate as a religious obligation. While existing studies have examined this discourse from political, ideological, and historical perspectives, limited attention has been devoted to the epistemological assumptions underlying scriptural interpretations of khilāfah. Addressing this gap, this study reinterprets the concept of khilāfah through Muhammad Abed al-Jabiri’s epistemological framework by integrating the Bayānī (textual) and Burhānī (rational) modes of reasoning. Using qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines Qur'anic verses, classical Arabic lexical sources, al-Jabiri’s epistemological writings, and relevant contemporary scholarship. The analysis combines textual interpretation with rational inquiry informed by the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah). The findings demonstrate that the Qur'anic verses commonly invoked to justify a universal caliphate do not prescribe a single normative model of political governance. From a Bayānī perspective, khilāfah primarily denotes succession, stewardship, and accountable leadership, whereas the Burhānī approach situates political authority within the principles of justice, public welfare, social harmony, and the protection of fundamental human interests. This study contributes to the literature by offering an epistemological reinterpretation that challenges literalist readings of khilāfah and argues that claims regarding the religious obligation of a universal caliphate require contextual, linguistic, historical, and maqāṣid-oriented reasoning. The proposed framework provides a more inclusive and contextually relevant understanding of Islamic governance in contemporary Indonesia.

Epistemologi Integratif dalam Pemahaman Hadis Umirtu An Uqatila An-Nās dan Relevansinya terhadap Islam Moderat
A textual interpretation of the Hadith “Umirtu an Uqātila an-Nās” can give rise to epistemological problems that legitimize violence against non-Muslims. This study aims to reconstruct the epistemology underlying the interpretation of this hadith by comparing the approaches of classical scholars and modern scholars, and to relate this to the promotion of moderate Islam. This qualitative study, conducted as a literature review, employs content analysis and comparative analysis. Primary data consists of the Hadith found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, while secondary data is drawn from relevant scholarly literature. The results indicate that the problem in understanding the Hadith “Umirtu an Uqātila an-Nās” does not lie in the authenticity of the isnad but rather in epistemological differences in interpreting the matn. Classical scholars emphasize linguistic analysis and hadith commentary. In contrast, modern scholars prioritize the asbāb al-wurūd, historical context, and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah. This study’s contribution underscores that integrating both classical and modern approaches can yield a contextual understanding of the Hadith “Umirtu an Uqātila an-Nās” and strengthen moderate Islamic religiosity.
Rekonstruksi Penalaran Hukum Islam dalam Muhammadiyah: Studi tentang Manhaj Tarjih, Tajdid, dan Ijtihad Jama‘i
This study examines Muhammadiyah’s Manhaj Tarjih as a methodological framework for reconstructing Islamic legal reasoning in Indonesia. The study aims to analyze its foundational perspective, legal sources, epistemological approaches, technical procedures, and institutional transformation in producing religious rulings. This study uses qualitative library research with descriptive-analytical methods. The data were collected from official Muhammadiyah documents, academic books, journal articles, theses, and relevant institutional publications. The findings show that Manhaj Tarjih places the Qur’an and al-Sunnah al-Maqbulah as the main normative sources, while ijma’, qiyas, maqashid al-shari‘ah, maslahah, opinions of jurists, and empirical realities function as supporting methodological instruments. Legal rulings are formulated through collective ijtihad that integrates bayani, burhani, and irfani approaches. This collective mechanism produces legal reasoning that is hierarchical, argumentative, integrative, and adaptive to social change. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated reading of Manhaj Tarjih as a theoretical and operational framework that connects tajdid, Islam Berkemajuan, legal sources, epistemology, and collective ijtihad. Thus, Manhaj Tarjih represents a modern model of Islamic legal reasoning that balances text, reason, spirituality, and public benefit. This model remains relevant for contemporary Islamic legal thought and Islamic education
Struktur Pemikiran Epistemologi Al- Farabi dalam Mengembangkan Metode Hukum Islam Modern
This study aims to construct the structure of Al-Farabi's epistemological thought as a foundation for developing a modern Islamic legal method relevant to contemporary dynamics. Amidst the complex challenges of modernity, Islamic legal methodology often faces a deadlock between textual rigidity and the demands of rationality. Al-Farabi, as a great Muslim philosopher, offered a unique synthesis of Aristotelian logic, revelation, and the demands of social welfare as embodied in the concept of Al-Madinah Al-Fadhilah. This study uses a library research method with a philosophical-hermeneutic approach. Data are analyzed through deductive steps to draw the relevance of Al-Farabi's epistemology to the contemporary Usul Fiqh framework. The results show that Al-Farabi's epistemology, which places reason as a tool for understanding universal essence (revelation), provides space for the development of a more dynamic and solution-oriented legal method without losing its transcendental value. Furthermore, this study finds that the effectiveness of the transformation of epistemology into Islamic law is highly dependent on the role of leadership. The concept of Rais (leader) in Al-Farabi's thought, which requires a combination of philosophical wisdom and political vision, serves as a crucial catalyst. A leader serves not only as an enforcer of the law, but also as a practical intellectual capable of translating epistemology into progressive policies (Siyasah Syar'iyyah). In conclusion, integrating Al-Farabi's epistemology into modern Islamic legal methodology requires transformative leadership possessing scientific integrity and dialectical skills to articulate Islamic law as a rational, ethical, and contextual system.
Konstruksi Ideologi Muhammadiyah: Telaah Filosofis Muqaddimah Ad/ Art, Tujuh Falsafah, Tujuh Belas Kelompok Ayat, Dan Kepribadian Muhammadiyah Dalam Bingkai Kaderisasi Islam Berkemajuan
This study examines the construction of Muhammadiyah ideology through an integrative philosophical analysis of its five constitutive pillars: the theological-philosophical foundations, the Muqaddimah of the Articles of Association (AD/ART), the seven philosophies (Tujuh Falsafah) of KH Ahmad Dahlan, the seventeen Quranic verse clusters (Tujuh Belas Kelompok Ayat), and the Personality of Muhammadiyah (Kepribadian Muhammadiyah). Employing a qualitative library-research approach grounded in philosophical hermeneutics, this study analyses official Muhammadiyah documents and contemporary scholarly literature. The findings demonstrate that Muhammadiyah ideology is structured along three interlocking axes: an ontological axis anchored in tawhid, a normative axis articulated in the Muqaddimah and AD/ART, and an axiological axis crystallised in the philosophies, verse clusters, and Personality. The seventeen verse clusters function as the spiritual-pedagogical core of the system, while the Personality operationalises these values into a corporate ethos of progressive Islam (Islam berkemajuan). This study contributes to the philosophy of Islamic education by offering a coherent framework for cadre formation that resists the ideological fragmentation and moral relativism of the digital era.
