Abstract
Realtime BOD5 forecasting is essential for optimizing wastewater treatment operations and ensuring regulatory compliance. This study proposes a machine-learning-based predictive framework integrating temporal feature engineering, ensemble gradient-boosting models, and explainable artificial intelligence for multimonth BOD5 prediction. Monthly wastewater quality data from 2008 to 2023 (192 months), including BOD5, total suspended solids, total phosphorus, and flow rate, were used to construct 48 temporal features based on lagged variables, rolling statistics, and physicochemical ratios. Four ensemble models─Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, XGBoost, and LightGBM─were trained on 2008–2020 data and evaluated on independent data from 2021 to 2023. LightGBM achieved the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.9894, RMSE = 0.223 mg·L–1, MAPE = 2.26%), enabling reliable predictions up to 12 months ahead. Feature importance analysis identified six month lagged BOD5 and the BOD5-to-flow ratio as dominant predictors. The framework supports proactive effluent quality management and early warning decision support.
Machine learning is widely proposed as a basis for smart wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) management, yet reported performance is rarely benchmarked against trivial alternatives. This study uses six years of monitoring from a municipal WWTP in Serbia serving 18,000 population equivalents, comprising 1017 fully measure...

The choice between traditional machine learning and deep learning for industrial time series prediction remains unsettled, particularly when feature engineering is accounted for. Using 10,000 operational samples from a 660 MW coal-fired boiler, we systematically compare support vector machine (SVM), LSTM, XGBoost, Ra...
Reliable estimation of laboratory-intensive water-quality variables remains challenging in spatially heterogeneous river systems. This study developed a machine-learning framework for predicting BOD, COD, DO, NH₄, NO₂, NO₃, and TA across major rivers of Khuzestan Province, Iran, using a 12-year monitoring dataset. Afte...

Constructed wetlands (CWs) offer a low-cost and sustainable option for wastewater treatment, but their performance is commonly assessed through infrequent, periodic field sampling that yields temporally sparse records. This study evaluated whether five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) removal efficiency at the Glož...
