Abstract
A novel monomer based on epoxydinaphthalene (EDN), a highly rigid bridged-bicyclic structural unit, was prepared using a high yielding reaction between 2,7-hydroxynaphthalene and the hydrate of 1,8-naphthalene dialdehyde. This monomer was used to make a poly(aryl ether ketone) and poly(aryl ether sulfone), EDN-PAEK and EDN-PAES, via efficient aryl ether bond formation, by reaction with cheaply available co-monomers. Both EDN-PAEK and EDN-PAES proved readily soluble in organic solvents allowing structural characterization and ready fabrication of robust self-standing films. Gas permeability measurements for He, H2, O2, N2, CO2 and CH4 indicated that these polymers provide a good trade-off between high selectivity and modest permeability relative to previously published data for structurally related polyketones or polysulfones.
A series of fluorine-substituent-containing sulfonated poly(arylene ether) membranes was synthesized and evaluated as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications. Fluorinated difluoro monomers were first reacted with three different diol monomers through nucleophilic polycondensation to obtain 4FP4-series poly...
Developing cost-effective and highly efficient Lewis pair (LP) systems represents a powerful strategy for achieving living/controlled polymerization of (meth)acrylates, enabling the synthesis of functional polar vinyl polymers with diverse structures and topologies. Herein, a new class of strong nucleophilic tetra-hy...
Recognizing the potential of polymer-to-polymer transformations for plastics valorization, a new electrochemical strategy for the decarboxylative functionalization of polyacrylates has been developed. In contrast to most electrochemical approaches to plastic waste valorization that use small-molecule mediators or only...

To develop alkaline‐ and oxidation‐tolerant polymer materials for anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrochemical energy conversion systems such as fuel cells and water electrolyzers, the synthesis of a polymer containing highly alkaline‐stable triarylsulfonium units is described. The Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupli...

Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) is a benchmark ionomer for nonfluorinated proton exchange membranes, yet its properties remain strongly dependent on the degree of sulfonation and relative humidity. In this work, SPEEK samples were synthesized using two distinct sulfonation routes: concentrated sulfuric ac...

A transition-metal-free and operationally simple strategy has been developed for the synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,2-diketones via a visible-light-induced decarboxylative arylation–oxidation cascade. Readily available aromatic carboxylic acids serve as convenient aryl precursors, and Eosin Y acts as an inexpensive organ...
