Abstract
The State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) are part of the public transportation system in India. They are an essential part of the low cost, accessible and reliable transport services to millions of passengers in urban and rural settings. Although the SRTUs make a very significant contribution to socio-economic development, most of them are experiencing recurring problems that hamper their efficiency and financial sustainability. Operational costs, heightened competition from private transport operators, older equipment, poor infrastructure, technological constraints and environmental issues have put significant strain on the activity of SRTUs. The current study highlights the key issues that are being faced by State Road Transport Undertaking in India and their impact on service quality, operational efficiency and sustainability. The study is based on secondary data and existing literature, and it identifies the main challenges in the sector and recommends strategic solutions for enhancing efficiency and sustainable growth. The results indicate that reforms in finances, technology, upgrading of fleets and policy measures are crucial for boosting the future of public road transport in India
