This proposed IoT-based traffic light monitoring system improves the efficiency and safety of traffic management by automatically detecting and reporting faults and enhancing the quality, speed and reliability of traffic infrastructure monitoring, thereby supporting road safety.

Abstract

This proposed IoT-based traffic light monitoring system improves the efficiency and safety of traffic management by automatically detecting and reporting faults. Using the PZEM-004T sensor, the system measures voltage, current and power in traffic lights. Data is monitored in real time via the Blynk app, enabling remote monitoring. When anomalies such as unusual voltage or current fluctuations are detected, alerts containing detailed information including the type of fault, timestamp (DS3231 RTC) and location (GPS Neo-6m) are immediately sent via SMS using the SIM800L module. The Arduino ATmega 2560 and the ESP8266 Wi-Fi module integrate all components and manage data transmission. System testing ensures reliable fault identification and rapid transmission of information to the relevant authorities. The PZEM-004T sensor is highly accurate for voltage (1% deviation) and power (2–3%), but exhibits significant errors (up to 32%) when detecting small currents. Overall, this IoT system enhances the quality, speed and reliability of traffic infrastructure monitoring, thereby supporting road safety.
