Abstract
Postharvest fruits are highly susceptible to spoilage, whereas traditional plastic packaging poses environmental concerns. This study presents a sprayable, water-washable carboxymethyl chitosan-based nanocomposite coating fabricated via a hydrogen bond-electrostatic self-assembly strategy. By incorporating epigallocatechin gallate-glucan‑selenium nanoparticles (E-G-SeNPs) and tannic acid, the coating demonstrates exceptional preservation efficacy and biosafety. It forms a film within seconds upon spraying, offering sustained release of E-G-SeNPs and enhanced antioxidant activity, with 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS·+) radical scavenging rates of 94.1% and 89.7%, respectively. The coating demonstrates broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, inhibiting over 98.9% of both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria. It significantly extends shelf life (by 2- to 4- fold), and can be easily removed by water rinsing, with minimal selenium residue (<0.15 mg/kg), ensuring that consumer daily selenium residue remains strictly within established dietary safety limits. This low-cost, water-washable, and highly versatile coating offers a sustainable solution for postharvest fruit preservation.
Litchi deteriorates rapidly postharvest due to high moisture, enzymatic browning, and microbes. In this work, an eco-friendly, antimicrobial aggregation-induced emission photosensitizers-loaded chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose (AIE-CS/CMC) coating film was developed and validated to significantly delayed pericarp brown...
This paper deals with the drawbacks of the single-component edible coatings through the development of an effective multi component nanocomposite dispersion system for postharvest preservation. A biodegradable edible coating made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), guar gum (GG), and carrageenan (CGN) was developed and f...

Bio-based packaging films are promising alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, but their application is limited by chemical crosslinkers, high feedstock costs, and performance-sustainability trade-offs. Here, a crosslinker-free ternary film (SCC) was fabricated from soy protein isolate, Camellia oleifera cake extrac...

The objective of this study was to fabricate antibacterial pectin-based active films activated with trans-cinnamaldehyde delivered through a nanoemulsion system. A whey protein isolate-inulin complex-stabilized nanoemulsion was incorporated into high-methoxyl pectin (HMP) and low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) matrices at four...

Conventional pesticide formulations suffer from poor foliage retention, rapid photodegradation, and the need for repeated applications, thereby reducing field efficacy and increasing environmental burden. Herein, we designed a water-dispersible, bioinspired nanopesticide (IND@PLA@PZTA) by coating indoxacarb-loaded poly...

Environmentally sustainable and functional food-packaging systems are increasingly being explored as platforms for the stabilization and controlled delivery of food bioactives. In this study, a multifunctional packaging film with pH-responsive properties was developed using poly(vinyl alcohol) and chitosan as the pol...
