Abstract
In this letter, a multi-agent hierarchical group-based handover strategy is proposed for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks, leveraging the Ward hierarchical clustering-enhanced dueling double deep Q-network (WHC-D3QN) strategy to reduce signaling overhead and enhance throughput. Specifically, the scheme first clusters users via Ward hierarchical clustering and then adopts centralized training with distributed execution to support efficient decision-making for these clustered users. On this basis, a personalized resource allocation network and a multiobjective reward mechanism are designed to alleviate network signaling overhead and load pressure. Simulation results indicate that, under a scenario with 1000 users, the proposed scheme decreases handovers by 61.29% compared to the load least first (LLF) algorithm without decreasing throughput, while also decreasing congestion rate by 46.26% and 55.02% relative to the QoS-aware idle handover (QIH) and Max received signal strength indicator (RSSI) algorithms, respectively.
Due to their high orbital velocity, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites traverse overhead in minutes, forcing ground users to frequently switch their serving beam or satellite. Such handover disrupts ongoing transmissions, introduces signalling overheads and synchronization delays across the constellation, and reduces the...

The integrated geostationary Earth orbit (GEO)-multibeam and low Earth orbit (LEO)-uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) network has emerged as a promising paradigm to enhance the coverage and capacity of terrestrial networks. However, due to the high dynamics of the network and the heterogeneous service demands of user equipm...

The proposed multi-agent reinforcement learning policy attains slightly higher throughput with fewer handovers by offloading a fraction of the users to the MEO and GEO layers, an emergent multi-orbit behavior that drives its favorable throughput and handover trade-off.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks are envisioned to provide wide-area connectivity for a massive number of user terminals. Realizing this vision requires efficient resource allocation, including user grouping, beamforming (BF) and power control, that adapts to the uneven spatio-temporal distribution of user loca...

The deployment of Ultra-Dense Networks (UDNs) in 5G systems is to meet the growing demand for high data rates and massive connectivity. However, the dense deployment of small cells increases handover frequency, leading to challenges such as handover failures (HOF), unnecessary handovers, and the ping-pong effect, leadi...
