Abstract

Digital transformation is reshaping healthcare systems globally, influencing clinical practice, education, leadership, and patient engagement. Nurses, as the largest segment of the healthcare workforce, play a pivotal role in adopting, implementing, and optimizing digital health technologies. This narrative review explores the expanding role of nurses in digital transformation, focusing on electronic health records (EHRs), mobile health (mHealth), telehealth and telerehabilitation, artificial intelligence (AI), automation technologies including robotics and drones, and wearable devices. Literature from 2015 to 2024 was reviewed to examine benefits, challenges, and implications for nursing practice. Digital technologies enhance patient-centered care, improve decision-making, enable real-time monitoring, and streamline workflows. However, issues such as digital divide, data privacy concerns, usability challenges, burnout, and inadequate training remain significant barriers. Strengthening digital literacy, leadership engagement, curriculum integration, and supportive organizational policies are essential to maximizing the potential of digital transformation. Nurses remain central to shaping safe, ethical, and effective digital healthcare systems.

Enhancing Patient Care Through Technology: The Role of Nurses in Digital Healthcare System

This study examined nurses' use of digital health technologies and its association with patient care outcomes in a private hospital in Quezon City. It investigated the level of technology integration and use in healthcare, including electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, digital tools, and health applications, and assessed their relationships with patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and service efficiency. Data were collected from nurses using a structured survey questionnaire and analyzed through quantitative descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and tests of difference. The research also examines nurses’ attitudes towards digital health applications, the difficulties they face during adoption, and the determinants of their effectiveness. Three interconnected theories are adopted to build a conceptual framework. Technology Competency of Caring in Nursing Theory by Locsin, the Science of Caring Theory by Jean Watson, and the Role Adaptation Mode. These theories support the study of how digital health applications help nurses improve patient care outcomes. The findings revealed that the respondents generally demonstrated a high level of technology utilization in healthcare settings. The study shows that the use and integration of digital health technologies are highly correlated with improved quality of care in a private hospital in Quezon City. The respondents showed a high degree of acceptance and use of various forms of digital health technologies such as electronic health records, telehealth platforms, digital devices, and health apps. The study has identified a significant effect of nurses' use of digital health applications on patient improvement, patient satisfaction, and service efficiency. The study is limited to a specific time frame and geographical area, which may limit the generalizability of the results to other healthcare settings with varying technological infrastructure or policies. In spite of these limitations, the research offers significant insights into the role of nurses in utilizing digital health applications to enhance patient care and efficiency of the healthcare system. It is highly recommended that any future research on the use of digital technologies in healthcare address other variables, such as organizational culture, leadership support, technological readiness, and nurses' attitudes towards digital innovation. This study aims to provide empirical evidence to support improvements in nursing practice, digital health integration, healthcare policies, and patient care delivery in healthcare institutions.

THE ROLE OF DIGITAL LEADERSHIP IN NURSING MANAGEMENT

The integration of digital technologies in the healthcare sector contributes significantly to the optimization of clinical processes and the improvement of patient care quality, and the proliferation of these technologies brings with it potential risks in terms of the safety, integrity and accessibility of sensitive health data. Nurses have the responsibility to ensure data security and clinical effectiveness by taking a leading role in the day-to-day applications of digital systems. In this context, the aim of this review is to thoroughly evaluate the impact of digital leadership in nursing services on healthcare, its application areas and importance. Digital leadership enables not only the effective use of technological tools; it also enables the development of digital competence of teams, adoption of innovative practices and sustainable improvement of healthcare. Effective digital leadership reinforces strategic decision-making processes, increases organizational agility, and directly supports patient safety. Leadership training and guidance enhance the digital skills of nurses and facilitate technological integration. The literature reveals that digital leadership transforms organizational culture, promotes innovation, and makes tangible contributions to quality and safety in healthcare. As a result, strengthening digital leadership increases service efficiency and sustainability by enabling nurses and healthcare institutions to participate effectively in digital transformation processes.

Digital transformation of home-based care: a narrative review of nursing, technology, and management synergies

Background The transition from the home-based care model represents an unprecedented revolution in the healthcare industry, with the conventional clinical-based healthcare system being replaced by innovations in digital health. Yet there is no comprehensive analysis that explains how nursing practices, healthcare management, and the digital health domain work together along with the community-based care system. The data in this regard is fragmented. This review summarizes findings on integrating nursing, technology, and management to support chronic care. Methodology A literature was screened by searching in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using keywords such as “home-based primary care,” “nurse-led models,” “telehealth,” and “digital health equity,” with a focus on studies published between 2010 and 2025. The literature was searched for high-quality, peer-reviewed publications in English. The researchers selected 115 papers to conduct their in-depth study based on titles, abstracts, and full text. Results These studies indicate that the shift from conventional home care methods to digital home care delivery requires nurses to develop digital skills to lead their teams while delivering personalized telehealth services. Nurses play a central role in coordinating care, facilitating patient engagement with effective technological developments that now provide better access to safer systems that enhance quality of life, while management frameworks support execution through policy development and resource allocation. Conclusion The existing challenges include staff shortages, digital access problems, and obstacles created by existing regulations. Gaps still exist in the long-term cost-effectiveness of digital health, accessibility of resources equally to all areas, and effect of remote care on the relationship of nurses and patients. The field of home care requires resilient and equitable systems that need both predictive analytics and social health factor solutions and ongoing partnerships between different sectors. Home care will depend on nursing leaders with digital skills to ensure that technology helps them provide empathetic patient care.

Emerging Technologies in Oncology Nursing: Integrating Informatics Competencies to Advance Safe, High-Quality, and Compassionate Care.

AIM To describe the rapid evolution of emerging digital technologies in oncology nursing and clarify the essential informatics competencies required by oncology nurses to advance safe, high-quality, and compassionate care across the cancer continuum. METHODS A narrative review of use cases from peer-reviewed literature, national workforce policy documents, and professional nursing frameworks as they relate to emerging technologies and their integration into oncology care. RESULTS Real-world implementations of artificial intelligence, telehealth, virtual nursing, remote patient monitoring (RPM), and medical device integration (MDI) demonstrate measurable clinical benefits, including enhanced symptom management, fewer emergency visits, and potential survival advantages. However, significant implementation gaps persist regarding algorithmic accountability, health equity, and a historic lack of direct nursing inclusion during technology design and validation. Nurse-led frameworks such as the Emerging Technology and AI Toolkit, which encompasses the 5 Rights of AI, the Innovation Inventory Heatmap, and Calculated INSIGHT provide practical scaffolding to educate nurses in evaluating and adopting emerging technologies. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS Grounded in caring science, emerging digital tools must function as intelligent partners that augment rather than replace human clinical judgment and the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. As care models continuously evolve across inpatient and outpatient settings, investment in standardized oncology nursing informatics competencies remains critical. Nurse leaders must actively transition from passive technology recipients to informed advocates and architects of the digital ecosystem, ensuring that automated systems amplify the capacity for presence, equity, and individualized, compassionate cancer care.

Interprofessional collaboration in healthcare: The role of telemedicine, artificial intelligence, and global health initiatives

The integration of telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI), and interprofessional collaboration is transforming healthcare delivery with promising implications for patient outcomes and system efficiency. This qualitative literature review analyzes peer-reviewed and gray literature published between 2023 and 2025 to explore the interplay of these elements in contemporary healthcare. Telemedicine has emerged as a crucial tool in long-term care and rural health, enabling remote consultations and bridging access gaps. However, its implementation is often hindered by communication barriers and unclear role delineation among healthcare professionals. AI applications show potential for improving diagnostics and patient management, yet data privacy concerns and user resistance remain significant barriers to adoption. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic underscored the urgency of global health cooperation, emphasizing the value of interprofessional education, dynamic leadership, and collaborative crisis response. Cross-sector models such as One Health illustrate how integration across disciplines can enhance system resilience. A case study from Kyrgyzstan, featuring the TeleMed.Kg initiative, demonstrates the potential of telemedicine to improve maternal and child health in remote areas while also highlighting infrastructural and regulatory limitations. The findings suggest that realizing the full benefits of telemedicine and AI depends on strengthening interprofessional collaboration, promoting digital literacy, and establishing inclusive policy frameworks. Addressing these challenges is essential for building equitable, adaptive health systems capable of meeting evolving healthcare needs worldwide.
