Abstract
Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but it may be possible to reduce their impact on infrastructure by following some guidelines. This study evaluated earthquake‐induced damage (from the March 28, 2025 event in Myanmar) to infrastructure (i.e., reinforced concrete [RC], masonry, and temples) through field investigations and fragility analysis. The overturning and beam–column joint failures with spectral collapse were predicted from the field data, which are presented in terms of several damage states (i.e., slight, moderate, heavy, and very heavy) using incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). Nonlinear time history analysis is used to perform IDA by varying the peak ground acceleration (PGA) in the range of 0–1.5 g. Some issues may influence these failures, such as crack depth, inadequate shear reinforcement at the joint, and inadequate seismic detailing. These recommendations are based on the field inspection. The idealized guidelines are provided to overcome these failures; these include reducing crack depth and placing adequate vertical and horizontal shear reinforcements at joints. This study may be enhanced in the future by including more damage categories and risk analysis.
The M7.9 Myanmar earthquake on March 28, 2025, caused extensive damage to the local transportation network. Through a 14‐day field investigation in the affected areas, a joint Sino–Myanmar survey team established a seismic damage database encompassing highway and railway bridges. To address the scarcity of near‐fault s...

It is an established fact that a considerable number of natural disasters occur on a global scale. The occurrence of natural disasters is subject to variation according to the geological location of the respective countries. Turkey is a country that is surrounded by fault lines. Therefore, the occurrence of earthquakes...

Arequipa, located in southern Peru, is a region characterized by the frequent occurrence of earthquakes due to its proximity to the subduction interface between the Nazca and the South American plates. Consequently, school buildings in Peru are classified as essential facilities and are expected to remain operational a...

When the latest updated Türkiye Earthquake Hazard Map and Active Fault Maps are examined, it is seen that a large part of Türkiye's surface area is at earthquake risk. With increasing urbanization, the majority of the population lives in cities built on active earthquake faults. The 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes ce...

<p>This paper analyses the seismic behaviour of a RC building with a tunnel structural system under seismic loading. This system is increasingly used in modern construction due to spatial rigidity and rapid construction; however, strong earthquakes, such as the one in Türkiye in 2023, have shown that even such bui...
