Integrating Citizen Science into Advanced Practice Nursing education: a contemporary challenge.

Abstract

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. This paper discusses the integration of Citizen Science into postgraduate nursing curricula for Advanced Practice Nurses as a strategy to strengthen their capacity to generate context-sensitive and socially relevant evidence. It examines the potential contributions of Citizen Science to evidence generation and knowledge co-creation and proposes pathways for curricular integration. These includes curriculum review, the implementation of Citizen Science pilot projects, capacity building for faculty members and clinical mentors to support research based on Citizen Science principles, the development of partnerships across academic, healthcare, governmental, and community settings, and the strengthening of science communication initiatives. The paper also discusses key implementation challenges, including institutional resistance, ethical and legal considerations, and the need to prepare educators and students for participatory research approaches. Integrating Citizen Science into postgraduate Advanced Practice Nursing education represents a contemporary and strategic opportunity to better prepare nurses to generate context-sensitive evidence, engage citizens as partners in knowledge production, and promote more responsive, equitable, and socially accountable healthcare.

TRANSFORMATION OF NURSING EDUCATION IN ARMENIA AND GEORGIA: COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION, EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS

Nursing education in Georgia has undergone substantial transformation over the past decade in response to healthcare reforms, European integration, and the growing demand for a competent nursing workforce capable of meeting contemporary healthcare challenges. Recent legislative reforms, including the regulation of the nursing profession, implementation of updated national educational standards, and introduction of continuing professional development requirements, have fundamentally reshaped nursing education and professional practice. The alignment of Georgian nursing education with the principles of the European Higher Education Area has encouraged educational institutions to redesign curricula around measurable learning outcomes, clinical competencies, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. At the same time, significant progress has been achieved in strengthening clinical education, expanding simulation-based learning, and improving quality assurance mechanisms. The effectiveness of a healthcare system largely depends on the professional preparation of the nursing workforce, including their knowledge, skills, and capacity for continuous professional development. In the twenty-first century, the healthcare sector faces new challenges, including population aging, the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, the rapid advancement of medical technologies, digitalization, and increasing expectations regarding the quality of healthcare services. Under these conditions, traditional models of nursing education are gradually being replaced by Competency-Based Education (CBE), whose primary objective is to develop not only theoretical knowledge but also practical, communication, analytical, and leadership competencies. In Armenia, the modernization of nursing education is also driven by the country's integration into the European Higher Education Area, the implementation of the principles of the Bologna Declaration, and the alignment of educational programs with international standards for quality assurance.

Advancing Nursing Practice Through Simulation: Enhancing Competency, Quality and Patient Outcomes.

Simulation has become an essential strategy for advancing nursing practice, clinical competence, patient safety and healthcare system performance. As care environments become increasingly complex, nurses must be prepared to respond to high-acuity situations, integrate emerging technologies, communicate effectively within interprofessional teams and contribute to quality improvement and systems transformation. This editorial introduces a special issue focused on simulation as a strategic driver of contemporary nursing practice. The manuscripts in this issue highlight the expanding role of simulation beyond education to include competency assessment, implementation science, leadership development, workflow testing, patient safety and global health equity. Simulation modalities, including high-fidelity manikins, standardized patients, immersive virtual and mixed reality, and artificial intelligence-enabled systems, offer scalable approaches to strengthen clinical judgement, teamwork and organizational learning. To fully realize its potential, simulation must be embedded within nursing education, clinical practice, quality improvement infrastructures and health system strategy. Nursing leaders have a critical role in ensuring that simulation is evidence-informed, ethically implemented, accessible and linked to measurable outcomes that improve care for patients, families and communities.

AI-driven Design Thinking and Service-Learning enhance nursing students’ evidence-based competencies in family healthcare delivery

Introduction: The integration of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) into nursing education faces challenges in linking theory to clinical application in complex family health contexts. Students struggle with efficiently accessing, appraising, and applying evidence influenced by sociocultural factors. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential but requires pedagogical design to foster critical thinking and ethical use beyond technical skills.Method: An action research with mixed methods was conducted with 100 nursing students. The intervention had four phases: participatory family diagnosis, AI-assisted evidence retrieval and validation, community educational workshops design and execution, and multi-level evaluation.Results: A significant shift in AI use from basic to strategic, with a 40% reduction in literature search time. Qualitative data revealed enhanced critical awareness and ethical reasoning, while quantitative results indicated 90% of students improved critical appraisal skills and 70% felt more confident in evidence-based decisions. The project impacted 100 families, with 90% trusting evidence-based recommendations.Conclusions: Integrating AI in experiential pedagogies like Design Thinking and Service-Learning effectively develops nursing competencies, ensuring technology adoption supports context-sensitive family health learning outcomes.

Innovative Educational Technologies in Undergraduate Mental Health Nursing Education: A Scoping Review

The evidence showed that, virtual reality simulations with varying immersive abilities were the most popular innovative educational technology used in undergraduate mental health nursing education and both immersive and non‐immersive VRS were equally effective in improving student learning experiences compared to traditional learning modalities.
