Abstract
Inclusive education increasingly emphasizes pedagogical approaches that promote participation, autonomy, and meaningful engagement for all learners. Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), an educational framework that engages students in addressing authentic, real-world challenges through collaboration, inquiry, and action, has gained attention as a promising approach for fostering academic, social, and transversal skills. CBL should therefore be understood as a pedagogical framework rather than an assistive technology, even if, when combined with assistive and digital tools, it can support information access, planning, collaboration, communication, and multimodal expression. However, its potential application to students with Learning Disabilities (LD) remains largely underexplored. In this short narrative review and position paper, we examine the theoretical foundations of CBL and discuss its relevance for inclusive educational settings. Drawing on evidence from the broader literature on challenge-, project-, and problem-based learning, we explore how key features of CBL, including student agency, collaborative learning, and multimodal engagement, may align with the learning profiles and strengths of students with LD. At the same time, we identify key challenges related to executive functioning demands, self-regulation, cognitive load, assessment practices, and the need for appropriate scaffolding and teacher support. We argue that CBL offers a valuable opportunity to move beyond deficit-oriented approaches and toward strength-based models of inclusion that recognize and value the diverse competencies of learners with LD. Building on the limited attention given to CBL in relation to students with learning disabilities, we propose a research agenda focused on how CBL can be implemented in accessible and supportive ways, drawing on Universal Design for Learning principles and evaluating outcomes related to academic achievement, self-determination, and participation.
Inclusive education aims to ensure equal learning opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities, by promoting participation, accessibility, and fairness in educational processes. Within this framework, inclusive assessment serves as a key mechanism for understanding students’ learning needs, guiding instructional decisions, and supporting academic progress through flexible and individualized approaches.
This paper presents a systematic literature review of international and Albanian studies on inclusive assessment practices published between 2010 and 2025. Following the PRISMA guidelines, peer-reviewed articles were identified and analyzed using databases such as Scopus, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The review explores contemporary assessment approaches, including formative, dynamic, and individualized assessment models, with particular attention to frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
The findings reveal that while inclusive assessment practices are increasingly integrated into educational systems internationally, their implementation in the Albanian context remains limited. Key challenges include insufficient teacher preparation, predominant use of traditional assessment methods, lack of appropriate resources and assessment tools, and inconsistencies in the application of inclusive education policies. As a result, a noticeable gap persists between internationally recognized best practices and everyday assessment realities in Albanian schools.
The study emphasizes the need for the development of a coherent national framework for inclusive assessment, targeted professional development for teachers, culturally responsive assessment tools, and greater involvement of parents and students in the assessment process. The paper concludes by offering recommendations aimed at strengthening inclusive assessment practices and supporting more equitable educational outcomes for students with disabilities in Albania.

Inclusive learning aims to ensure equal access, participation, and success for all students, regardless of ability, background, or socio-economic status. Traditional standardized education models have often excluded diverse learners, but emerging educational technologies offer new opportunities to address these gaps. This paper analyzes how technologies such as AI-driven personalization, adaptive learning systems, virtual and augmented reality, learning analytics, assistive tools, and cloud-based platforms support inclusive education. These are examined within frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiated instruction, which emphasize accessibility, flexibility, and learner engagement. The study proposes a multi-layered framework for implementing inclusive educational technology, incorporating learner profiling, adaptive content delivery, accessible design, and continuous feedback through data analytics. Results indicate improvements in engagement, completion rates, accessibility compliance, and learner satisfaction. However, challenges such as data privacy, algorithm bias, infrastructure gaps, and the need for teacher training remain significant. The paper concludes that while technology can greatly enhance inclusive learning, effective implementation requires careful planning, supportive policies, and ongoing research.

Gamification has emerged as an innovative teaching strategy that enhances student engagement and learning by integrating game-design elements into educational activities. Features such as points, badges, leaderboards, challenges, and immediate feedback make learning more interactive, enjoyable, and motivating. Research indicates that gamification encourages active participation, improves knowledge retention, strengthens conceptual understanding, and develops problem-solving and collaboration skills. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational approaches contribute to creating meaningful learning experiences when game mechanics are aligned with educational objectives. However, effective implementation requires careful planning to ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and a balance between rewards and genuine learning, avoiding excessive dependence on external incentives. In higher education, particularly in Nepal, where traditional lecture-based instruction remains common, gamification offers a promising approach to address the learning preferences of digitally connected students. By fostering autonomy, collaboration, and continuous feedback, educators can create dynamic, student-centered classrooms that support academic achievement while preparing learners with critical thinking, teamwork, and resilience. Continued research and practical application will further refine gamification as an effective educational strategy.
This critical literature review examines the use of digital learning environments in special and inclusive education, focusing on assistive technologies, adaptive platforms, artificial intelligence, online learning, smart learning environments, and teacher competence. The review addresses three main questions: what benefits these environments offer students with special educational needs and disabilities, what knowledge and competencies teachers need to use them effectively, and what barriers limit their inclusive value. The findings show that digital tools can improve access, communication, engagement, self-paced learning, and social participation when they offer flexible, multimodal ways to learn. However, technology alone does not create inclusion; its success depends on teacher guidance, institutional support, reliable infrastructure, accessibility by design, and careful ethical governance. The review also highlights risks such as cognitive overload, weak accessibility, unequal access, privacy concerns, and biased or opaque AI systems. Overall, digital learning environments can support more equitable education, but only when guided by learner needs, teacher judgement, and clear lines of responsibility.

Inclusive education has emerged as a fundamental principle of equitable educational development by promoting equal learning opportunities for all students regardless of their physical, intellectual, sensory, social, emotional, or developmental differences. The successful inclusion of Children with Special Needs (CWSN) in mainstream schools requires educational systems to move beyond traditional instructional approaches and adopt learner-centered pedagogical strategies that accommodate diverse learning abilities while fostering participation, independence, and academic achievement. This study evaluates the effectiveness of inclusive pedagogical strategies in supporting CWSN within mainstream educational environments by examining the interaction among classroom practices, teacher preparedness, curriculum adaptation, assistive technologies, school leadership, family involvement, and policy implementation. The research investigates how differentiated instruction, individualized educational planning, collaborative learning, multisensory teaching methods, continuous formative assessment, and technology-enabled instructional support contribute to improving educational access, classroom engagement, social inclusion, and learning outcomes for students with diverse educational needs. Particular attention is given to the role of teachers in creating supportive classroom environments through positive attitudes, adaptive instructional methods, effective classroom management, and collaboration with special educators, therapists, and parents. The study further explores institutional factors such as infrastructure accessibility, resource availability, professional development programs, and administrative support that influence the successful implementation of inclusive education policies. The findings indicate that schools adopting comprehensive inclusive pedagogical practices demonstrate significant improvements in student participation, academic performance, peer interaction, emotional well-being, and overall classroom inclusivity compared with institutions relying primarily on conventional teaching methods. The research also identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate teacher training, limited availability of specialized learning resources, large class sizes, inconsistent policy implementation, and societal misconceptions regarding disability, all of which continue to affect the effectiveness of inclusive education. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that meaningful inclusion extends beyond physical placement in mainstream classrooms and requires continuous collaboration among educators, families, school administrators, policymakers, and community stakeholders to ensure equitable educational experiences. It concludes that inclusive pedagogy should be regarded as a dynamic educational framework that strengthens educational quality for all learners by recognizing individual differences, promoting collaborative learning, encouraging active participation, and creating supportive learning environments where every child is provided with meaningful opportunities to achieve academic success and holistic personal development.

Contemporary education is shaped by the need for more inclusive, flexible, and student-centered learning environments. As educational systems respond to social, cultural, and technological changes, new pedagogical approaches have become increasingly important in supporting learner engagement, classroom equity, and practical competence. In this context, inclusive pedagogy, active learning models, and technology-supported instruction offer valuable perspectives for modern educational research. The chapters in this volume examine selected issues in teaching and learning from different but complementary perspectives. The first chapter discusses the decolonization of the classroom and proposes a more inclusive pedagogical framework. The second chapter focuses on the flipped classroom model and evaluates its evidence-based outcomes across disciplines. The third chapter explores the role of computer laboratory facilities and self-efficacy in enhancing students’ statistical practicum competence through a stimulus–organism–response perspective. By bringing together these studies, this volume highlights the importance of rethinking classroom practices in line with contemporary educational needs. The chapters demonstrate how inclusive frameworks, active learning models, digital facilities, and learner self-efficacy can contribute to more effective and adaptive educational environments. It is hoped that this book will serve as a useful academic resource for researchers, educators, students, and professionals interested in educational sciences, pedagogy, classroom innovation, digital learning environments, and student competence. We extend our sincere appreciation to all contributing authors for their valuable scholarly efforts.
