Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Samples from Polish Lactating Women. Exposure Assessment and the Correlations Between Pollution Content and Data from the Medical Questionnaire
Findings provide preliminary insights into factors that may be associated with PCB levels in breast milk and underscore the need for continued biomonitoring in larger, well-characterized populations.
Abstract
Chemical substances used in various industrial applications can pose serious environmental risks. Among them, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are of particular concern. These compounds have been detected in both environmental and biological samples, including human breast milk. In this study, seven PCBs (PCB 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, and 180) were quantified in 67 breast milk samples from lactating mothers residing in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region of Poland. Quantification was performed using previously optimized and validated methods involving the QuEChERS technique and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The highest total PCB (ΣPCB) concentration observed was 732.79 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with a mean ΣPCB concentration of 118.90 ng/g lw across all samples. The study also explored associations between PCB concentrations, breast milk nutrient composition, lactation stage, parity, and other maternal and infant characteristics obtained from questionnaire data. These findings provide preliminary insights into factors that may be associated with PCB levels in breast milk and underscore the need for continued biomonitoring in larger, well-characterized populations.
This study assessed the potential human health risks associated with consuming smoked seafood
contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the Niger Delta, Nigeria. Specifically,
it examined the levels and distribution of PCB congeners in commonly consumed species,
compared observed concentrations with regul...

Persistent organic pollutants, such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), can persist in the human body and reach the fetus via transplacental transfer. In this exploratory pilot case-control biomonitoring study, we measured selected OCPs and PCBs in paired placental tissue and umbil...

Total Diet Studies (TDSs) provide data on the occurrence of substances in commonly consumed foods for dietary exposure assessment. We present data from the BfR MEAL Study, the first full-scale German TDS, for the determination of plasticizers and additives in 226 pooled food samples. A multi-technique approach with mat...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an important environmental contaminant with documented adverse effects on both human and animal health. The present study provides the first assessment of BPA concentrations in the hair of stray cats inhabiting a highly urbanized and industrialized environment. Utilizing liquid chromatography–mass...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a compound used in food contact materials that has gained importance due to its endocrine-disrupting effects. In this study, BPA levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) method in a total of 56 canned food samples (33 tuna - Group I; 13 other...
