Goal Recognition infers an actor’s goal from observed actions and is critical for human-AI cooperation in areas like robotics, healthcare, and autonomous driving. Traditional Goal Recognisers (GRs) predict likely goals but rarely explain their reasoning, limiting their application. This research develops a framework for user-centred natural language explanations for black-box GRs, aimed at non-expert users in complex decision-making settings. It investigates what information explanations should include, how to derive it from model outputs and external sources, and how to communicate it effectively. The framework provides two complementary explanation types: Impact and Critique.
The method, ECCOLA, is presented, which aims at making the high-level AI ethics principles more practical, making it possible for developers to more easily implement them in practice.
