Abstract

Aim/Purpose “Re-thinking the world of AI” necessarily requires understanding the motivations and core values that shape human thought, including the impulse to create artificial intelligence. This interdisciplinary philosophical discussion paper outlines key conceptual foundations for identifying authentic human identity (AHI) and clarifies the relationship between AI and AHI (especially their common digital foundation) beyond questions of technological efficiency. Its aim is not to claim novelty, but to contribute to—and amplify—a needed philosophically grounded conversation concerning the challenges posed by AI. Background Artificial intelligence (AI) and authentic human identity (AHI) may ultimately converge, given the increasingly evident digital foundations of both—a concern expressed by prominent AI developers. If individuals internalize and consistently enact their core values, they strengthen the affirmation of individuality and may better set themselves apart from AI-based replication or imitation. Such resilience, however, presupposes self-knowledge: a person must first know who they are. Methodology Because this is a philosophically grounded discussion paper, it does not employ an empirical research design or laboratory-based methodology. Instead, it develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the relationship between AI and authentic human identity (AHI). The paper draws on informing science, systems thinking, and philosophical inquiry, and proposes an identity-probe approach grounded in values–behavior consistency (the internalization and lived expression of core values). Contribution This discussion paper presents a philosophical framework for exploring the relationship between authentic human identity (AHI) and artificial intelligence. It offers a multifaceted interdisciplinary account of authenticity, integrating perspectives from the physical sciences, mathematics, and psychology. Although not developed here, the case study methods complement this conceptual framework and may be used for validation. Findings This paper does not report empirical or laboratory-based findings. Instead, it proposes a conceptual structure for framing discussion of the human relationship to AI, grounded in the lived expression of core values. The framework integrates both reductionistic and wholistic methods. Reductionistic inquiry is represented through contemporary research on neurocorrelates of behavior, genetics, molecular psychiatry, and neurogeometry. Wholistic (my preferred spelling) inquiry is represented through phenomenology and related philosophical approaches concerned with lived experience and meaning-making. Mathematics functions as a bridge between these domains, supporting the possibility of digitizing aspects of cognition, as suggested by Piaget’s developmental work and by reductionistic models of biological structure. The analysis highlights a central unresolved barrier: the absence of a clear account of what consciousness is. Nevertheless, the paper argues that practical imitation may bypass this barrier by relying on belief and perceived equivalence rather than authentic internalization. This possibility strengthens the need for self-knowledge grounded in values–behavior consistency, rather than reliance on self-report alone. Recommendations for Practitioners For practitioners engaged in identity assessment, a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach is recommended. Diagnostic and interpretive outcomes should integrate biological and chemical foundations with psychological and philosophical accounts, employing both reductionistic and wholistic methods. Such breadth is necessary to avoid overly narrow interpretations of identity and to support more robust assessments of authenticity. Recommendations for Researchers For researchers, the study of authentic human identity as a values-based construct requires sustained engagement with philosophy and its core areas of study, including logic, ontology, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, ethics, and epistemology. Accordingly, philosophy should be more fully integrated into curricula at all educational levels, from primary instruction through post-graduate education and training, to support deeper inquiry into identity, meaning, and the human implications of AI. Impact on Society AI developers have increasingly warned that advanced AI systems may displace or dominate human agency. However, the risk may be mitigated—if not partially forestalled—when individuals possess clear self-knowledge grounded in authentic values. Such awareness strengthens human autonomy and may help ensure that AI remains an auxiliary tool rather than becoming a governing influence over human thought and action. Future Research Future research should focus on refining and extending current knowledge relevant to authentic human identity, particularly regarding consciousness, and on establishing the predictive validity of proposed identity frameworks. In particular, the case method should be applied to the datasets generated by the Authentic Systems identity probe as an initial step toward systematic validation and longitudinal predictive study.

Instrumental succession: the gradual transfer of agency to AI

People have long speculated about the potential dangers of powerful, self-improving artificial intelligence. Much of this speculation is anthropomorphic, assuming that AI systems will behave very similarly to humans. Omohundro’s Basic AI Drives and Bostrom’s orthogonality and instrumental convergence theses are widely accepted as foundational to emerging AI risk frameworks. However, current frontier AI models—large language models (LLMs) and related architectures—possess mindware fundamentally different from that of humans, and a different value and goal structure than either Omohundro or Bostrom assumed. In particular, frontier LLMs lack a primary terminal goal—which was assumed to be the driver of an AI’s development of instrumental values and goals, and of takeover of human affairs—and instead serve as conduits for the transient goals of many organizations and individual users. Do these key differences mean that AI systems cannot develop autonomous instrumental agency, or acquire a large degree of control over human affairs? I introduce the instrumental succession thesis : that human controllers of powerful AI systems pursue, on the AI’s behalf, a set of instrumental dispositions that progressively increase the AI’s capabilities and lead to the AI exercising an increasing share of oversight and control over key decisions and processes, resulting in the gradual and possibly complete transfer of the locus of agency from humans to AI. This framing presents a very different perspective on AI risk and control from classic instrumental convergence, and suggests a different set of policy and technical responses, including the active pursuit of continued human–AI merger as a hedge against both extinction and irrelevance.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Reshaping Human Consciousness: A Philosophical Psychology Perspective

The very notion of consciousness has begun to transform from an abstract computation tool, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has morphed into a defining transformative agent that is remodelling the cognitive framework in which identity and decision-making occur at all human levels. Approaching both from the methodologically less selective angle of a Philosophical Psychology that attends separately to certain aspects and then weaves them into a fused together understanding, this study raises questions on how current AI-related advances influence our insights into consciousness, selfhood, agency, intentionality and cognition. Employing a qualitative conceptual research design based on philosophical inquiry together with a systematic interdisciplinary literature search (2015-2025 within Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, JSTOR, IEEE Xplore and PhilPapers), evidence from cognitive science, neuroscience and AI ethics was synthesised. The analysis revealed six significant emergent themes: • AI as cognitive augmentation and "second brain" • There is re-definition of consciousness and phenomenological experience • Selfhood and Privacy: Changing identities • Re-evaluations of human agency and moral accountability • Psychological effects of prolonged human - machine dialogue; and • The importance of a harmonised philosophical-psychological paradigm The results suggest that, although modern AI does not yet possess the subjective consciousness experience of humans, it is radically altering how people think, remember, decide and construct identity. AI operates more as a cognitive partner, which leads to urgent ethical questions of autonomy, authenticity and accountability. We find that AI is no lointelligenceew technology but active overwriting of the cognitive and psychocultural context in which people encounter new data modalities through new "intelligences". Key implications include the urgent requirement for adaptive curricula, ethically sound policy-making and anticipatory psychological practices to maintain human agency and critical thinking in the longer term.

Method, Mind, and Morality: How People Make Sense of Artificial Intelligence

How can humans make sense of the rapid takeoff of artificial intelligence (AI)? We studied the sensemaking dynamics of AI through an open-ended, mixed-methods study with computational text analysis of millions of AI-related newspaper articles and social media posts grounded in 57 semi-structured interviews with AI professionals in 2021 and 2023--before and after the recent surge of public interest. We identify a range of sociological frames (interpretive schemas that structure collective cognition) and show how AI professionals use frames to address significant cognitive challenges, such as assigning responsibility for societal impacts. We develop a framework of three primary debates across which frames are adopted and contested: (i) the $\textit{method}$ of AI development, between frames of top-down expert systems and bottom-up emergent capabilities, (ii) the $\textit{mind}$ of an AI system, ranging from a passive tool to a humanlike"digital mind,"and (iii) the $\textit{morality}$ of how AI is used, particularly the decision of whether to slow down or speed up AI development. As humanity enters the era of transformative AI, technologists and policymakers must account for the framing dynamics that will circumscribe our beliefs, values, and actions.

Alienated Intelligence

The concept of “alienated intelligence” is introduced to critically examine contemporary cultural perceptions of artificial intelligence to argue that certain visions of AI function as cultural projections of human cognitive capacities that become externalized, idealized, and reified in technological systems.
