Impossibility of a nontrivial Brunn--Minkowski inequality for higher Dirichlet eigenvalue

Abstract

Let $\lambda_j(K)$ be the $j$th Dirichlet eigenvalue of a convex body $K$. It is well known that $\lambda_1$ satisfies a Brunn--Minkowski inequality: $K \mapsto \lambda_1(K)^{-1/2}$ is concave on the family of convex bodies. We show that no analogous statement holds for higher eigenvalues. More precisely, for any $j \geq 2$ and $N \geq 2$, if $K \mapsto (f \circ \lambda_j)(K)$ is concave on the family of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for some function $f: (0, \infty) \to \mathbb{R}$, then $f$ must be constant.

A uniform bound in the dimensional Brunn--Minkowski inequality for even log-concave measures

For every $n\ge 2$, we prove that there exists an exponent $p_n$ such that, for every even log-concave probability measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb R^n$, all nonempty symmetric convex sets $K,L\subseteq\mathbb R^n$, and all $\lambda\in[0,1]$, $$ \mu(\lambda K+(1-\lambda)L)^{p_n} \ge \lambda\mu(K)^{p_n}+(1-\lambda)\mu(L)^{p_n}, $$ where $$ p_n\ge \frac{c}{n^2\ln n} $$ for some absolute constant $c>0$.

Exterior power sums

We prove that for every fixed $\lambda>0$ and all sufficiently large $n$, any $z_1,\dots,z_n\in\C$ with $|z_j|\geq1$ satisfy $\max_{2\leq k\leq n+1}|\sum_j z_j^k|>e^{-\lambda n}$. Consequently, the $n$th root of the optimal maximum tends to $1$, so no constant $C>1$ in Erd\H{o}s 973 can exist. The proof combines a truncated exponential factorization with overconvergence on an open set outside the unit disk and a normal-family obstruction for Cauchy transforms.

A sharp isoperimetric inequality for the Neumann--Poincar\'e operator in every dimension

Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge2$, be a bounded connected domain with boundary of class $C^{1,\alpha}$, where $0<\alpha<1$. For the adjoint Neumann--Poincar\'e operator $K^*_{\partial\Omega}$, normalised so that its distinguished eigenvalue is $1/2$, let $\lambda_j^+(\Omega)$ denote the upper min--max values on the mean-zero energy space. We prove $\sum_{j=1}^{d}\lambda_j^+(\Omega)\ge \frac{d-2}{2}.$ It follows that $\lambda_1^+(\Omega)\ge \frac{d-2}{2d},$ with equality if and only if $\Omega$ is a ball. In dimension three this proves the $1/6$-conjecture of Miyanishi and Suzuki. The proof uses the coordinate boundary-charge densities induced by uniform applied fields. Their energy Gram matrix is the perfect-conductor polarization tensor $M_\infty$. Positivity of a $2d\times2d$ Gram matrix yields the endpoint Hashin--Shtrikman inequality $|\Omega|\mathrm{Tr}(M_\infty^{-1})\le1,$ and bounds the trace of the compression of $K^*_{\partial\Omega}$ to the applied-field space. Equality in the inverse-trace inequality makes the interior Newtonian potential quadratic, so a converse to Newton's theorem identifies $\Omega$ as an ellipsoid. Equality in the spectral estimate also makes the Hessian of this potential isotropic, which forces the ellipsoid to be a ball.

Sharp Hausdorff Bounds for the Interior Singular Set of Convex $k$-Hessian Solutions

Let $2\le k\le n$, let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be open and convex, and let $u$ be a convex viscosity solution of $\sigma_k(D^2u)=1$ in $\Omega$. We prove that the set on which $u$ fails to be locally $C^2$ has vanishing $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. In the intermediate range $3\le k<n$, this gives a codimension-one refinement of the known almost-everywhere partial regularity, and the exponent is sharp. More generally, for a convex viscosity subsolution of $\sigma_k(D^2u)\ge\lambda>0$, we obtain Hausdorff bounds for strata defined by the affine dimension of all supporting contact sets. The proof combines a support-dependent Chou--Wang barrier argument, an estimate for the product of the smallest $k$ semiaxes of a John ellipsoid, and Mooney's convex section-covering theorem. As a direct analytical consequence, the full distributional Hessian is absolutely continuous and $u\in W^{2,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\Omega)$, yielding a $k$-Hessian counterpart of the $W^{2,1}$ regularity known for singular Monge--Amp\`ere solutions. In a logically separate structural part, we characterize the distinguished number of flat directions, $n-k+1$, by an asymptotic infimum mean-value formula over affine sections, and explain how this mean-value heuristic leads to the supporting-contact geometry used in the proof.

Extremal graphs for the $k$-th eigenvalue

For a simple graph $G$ of order $n$, let $\lambda_1(G)\ge \cdots \ge \lambda_n(G)$ denote its adjacency eigenvalues. Hong's problem asks for the optimal upper bound for $\lambda_k(G)$. A recent theorem of Sivashankar gives, for every $k\ge3$, \[ \lambda_k(G)\le \frac{(k-2)\sqrt{k+1}+2}{2k(k-1)}\,n-1, \] with sharp examples arising from maximal real equiangular tight frames. In this paper, we characterize the equality case. We also obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the extremal graphs for $\lambda_3$ and $\lambda_4$.

The Spherical Gr\"unbaum Inequality

We prove an analogue of Gr\"unbaum's inequality on the sphere. Let $n \geq 3$ and let $K$ be a convex body on $\mathbb S^{n-1}\subset \mathbb R^n$ with centroid at $\theta\in \mathbb S^{n-1}$. Then for any $u\in \mathbb S^{n-1}$ that is orthogonal to $\theta$ we have $$\sigma(K\cap u^+) \ge \left(1-\frac{1}{n}\right)^{n-1} \sigma(K),$$ where $\sigma$ denotes the spherical measure. The constant in this inequality is optimal.
