An analysis of how SysML v2 can systematically support multi-view modeling and Authoritative Source of Truth (ASoT)-based engineering practices and a first assessment of SysML v2’s potential and boundaries as a foundation for a more integrated and consistent digital engineering ecosystem.
Abstract
Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) has become essential for the development of complex systems involving multiple stakeholders, engineering domains, and software tools. However, effective collaboration remains hindered by model fragmentation, where critical engineering data is distributed across heterogeneous environments. This fragmentation raises major challenges in terms of semantic consistency, cross-domain traceability, and tool interoperability, ultimately leading to errors and redundant manual effort. This paper provides an analysis of how SysML v2 can systematically support multi-view modeling and Authoritative Source of Truth (ASoT)-based engineering practices. While these concepts have remained largely implicit in the community, we demonstrate this vision through a detailed case study and analyze how SysML v2 language constructs, extension mechanisms, and API capabilities can be used to represent core system data, relate heterogeneous engineering artifacts, and support consistency management across tools while preserving organizational data sovereignty. Finally, we discuss current limitations of the SysML v2 environment and identify missing capabilities that still prevent it from forming a complete operational solution. This analysis offers a first assessment of SysML v2’s potential and boundaries as a foundation for a more integrated and consistent digital engineering ecosystem.
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) increasingly depends on the ability to integrate heterogeneous domain knowledge into unified modeling environments. The Systems Modeling Language version 2 (SysML v2) has been introduced as a formally defined, extensible language intended to serve as such an integration platform....

The results indicate that stakeholders perceive model integration as a multi-dimensional alignment problem across semantics, behavior, traceability, and exchange interoperability, and perceptions vary by organizational role and frequency of integration involvement.
The increasing complexity of systems within Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environments has made structured and reliable use case modeling critically important. Existing approaches to SysML Use Case Diagram modeling and verification remain fragmented, addressing generation, validation, or reuse in isolation. Th...
