How fault tree analysis is utilized in the motorsport industry

· IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2025 · 0 citations

Abstract

A risk analysis method, fault tree analysis, integrates across motorsport competitions to create risk mitigation strategies for vehicle design, vehicle maintenance, and team operations. In motorsports, it is important to understand and manage risk effectively to ensure safety for the drivers, enhance performance of the vehicles, and stay competitive in racing competitions. Motorsport organizations and teams use fault tree analysis as a risk identification tool to identify potential failure modes and their causes. By doing so, fault tree analysis efficiently facilitates a comprehensive assessment of risks associated with vehicle operations and design. Through examining case studies from leading racing organizations such as Formula 1, the paper highlights how fault tree analysis serves as a vital tool in the continuous improvement of safety protocols, design improvements, and operational efficiency in motorsport.
