TL;DR

High serum leucine levels can cause insulin resistance in elderly, obese, prediabetic, and diabetic patients, suggesting its potential use as a biomarker for early diagnosis.

Abstract

Background and objective: Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (T2DM) represents a serious risk to public health known as hyperglycemia. High levels of serum leucine a branched chain amino acid have been associated with early insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances. This study investigates the relationship between serum leucine levels and insulin resistance, and to evaluate its potential as a biomarker alongside standard blood sugar markers in diabetic, prediabetic, and leucine-supplemented individuals undergoing training. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted at the (Galiawa hospital for diabetes and endocrinology and (AKA Fitness) center)/ Erbil city / Iraq. A total of 155 participants, aged between 30 and 69, were included, composed of 46 with T2DM, 38pre-diabetic patients, 36 non-diabetic and 35 healthy young active training individuals who received leucine supplementation. Data was collected by interview questionnaire about; sociodemographic, life style and results of biochemical tests. Results: High levels of serum Leucine were significantly increase with age, obesity (OR=2.4, 95% CI. 1.7 - 2.8) and increased risk of high fasting blood sugar (OR=1.14,95% of CI 1.09-1.18), HbA1c (OR=1.24, 95% of CI 1.12-1.37), and insulin resistance (OR= 1.06, 95% of CI 1.02-1.1) in diabetic and prediabetic. Excessive supplementation caused excess serum leucine levels and increase potential insulin resistance (OR=1.3, 95% CI I,07-1.6) with advancing age. Conclusion: High serum leucine levels can cause insulin resistance in elderly, obese, prediabetic, and diabetic patients, suggesting its potential use as a biomarker for early diagnosis. A low dose of leucine supplementation should be considered in individuals undergoing training.

Serum Prolactin, Glycemic Control, and Insuline Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes in Iraq: A Sex-Stratified Cross-Sectional Comparative Studay

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents an increasing health burden in Iraq. Prolactin (PRL) is involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism since high PRL serum levels are associated with low incidence of T2DM. This study evaluated the relationship between serum prolactin levels and key indicators of glycemic c...

Association of Serum Magnesium, Insulin Resistance, and Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Serum magnesium levels were associated with glycemic control, lipid profile, renal functioning, and microvascular complications in T2DM and periodic surveillance and possible correction of magnesium deficiency may represent a potential complementary approach requiring further evaluation.

Obesity and Insulin Resistance: Clinical Relevance Analysis of Multiple Metabolic Indicators in Insulin Resistance in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

In patients with type 2 diabetes, WHR and serum uric acid levels are significantly correlated with insulin resistance status, and may provide preliminary insights into the metabolic abnormalities associated with insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Serum vitamin D levels and their association with glycemic control and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes

Numerous studies have demonstrated the role of vitamin D in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but evidence regarding its association with glycemic control and insulin resistance among T2DM patients in Indonesia is still limited. This study investigated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(...

Assessment of Serum Ferritin Levels in Patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease of chronic hyperglycemia. New evidence suggests that iron metabolism, specifically serum ferritin, is involved in its pathogenesis. Objectives: To evaluate and compare serum ferritin levels in patients with Type 1 DM (T1DM), Type 2 DM (T2DM) and healthy controls...

Dyslipidemia as a Predictor of Liver Dysfunction, Glycaemic Control and Insulin Resistance: A Cross-Sectional Study

Dyslipidemia (DL), a common metabolic disorder, negatively influences the regulation of glycemia, liver function and insulin sensitivity and is a crucial factor in the dramatic increase in metabolic diseases. In India, the prevalence ranges from 15–20% in rural populations to 25–30% indicating the wide-spread prevalenc...
