Foundations of Consecutive Interpreting: For EFL University Students

Abstract

Foundations of Consecutive Interpreting: For EFL University Students introduces consecutive interpreting through Arabic–English and English–Arabic teaching cases for Arabic-speaking EFL university students across the Arab world. It connects understanding spoken messages with accountable oral performance. Modern Standard Arabic is used unless another variety is identified, and the book recognizes differences in language readiness and educational experience. The fifteen chapters progress through interpreting modes and responsibilities, active listening, speech analysis, memory and recall without notes, reformulation, oral delivery, note-taking principles, note layout and reconstruction, numbers and other high-risk details, preparation and terminology, Arabic variation and pragmatics, dialogue interpreting, extended consecutive performance, professional and remote settings, and quality, feedback, and continuing development. Short explanations and defined specialist terms support university-level analysis. Worked bilingual examples, source scripts, guided activities, five Practice and Apply tasks per chapter, short quizzes, explained answers, learning outcomes, key terms, roadmaps, and infographics support practice and review. Partner- or instructor-read scripts can provide listening practice, with recordings used only where consent and course rules permit. The flexible course design supports approximately 35–45 contact hours and further supervised learning. The textbook belongs to the Translation Studies branch of English Language Studies for EFL University Students.
