Foundations of Novel: For EFL University Students
Abstract
Foundations of Novel: For EFL University Students introduces the study of novels through close reading, narrative analysis, and evidence-based interpretation. It is designed for international Year 2 or Year 3 undergraduate EFL students who have completed an introduction to literature. Explanations provide an approximately B1-oriented language-support target while retaining university-level analytical expectations. Across fifteen chapters, the textbook examines the novel as a literary form; story and plot; narrators, voice, and point of view; characterization; setting; narrative time; style and dialogue; and patterns of theme, motif, and symbol. Later chapters connect these tools to genre, realism and experimentation, histories of the novel, society and identity, literary criticism, world fiction, translation, adaptation, and digital forms. Worked analyses distinguish textual evidence from interpretation and identify the limits of a claim. Guided activities, chapter roadmaps, review infographics, five Practice and Apply tasks per chapter, short quizzes, and complete explained answers support progressive independent analysis. A glossary, subject index, scholarly sources, and optional graded or translated reading suggestions support review and further study. The course is planned for approximately 35–45 classroom contact hours, plus independent reading.
