Abstract

Foundations of Translation: For EFL University Students introduces Arabic–English translation in both directions for Arabic-speaking undergraduates across the Arab world. It develops the ability to analyze a source text, understand a translation brief, compare possible renditions, and explain decisions using evidence. No previous translation course is required; the book assumes basic Arabic literacy and supported English reading, with Modern Standard Arabic as the default written variety. The fifteen chapters cover translation as communication, purpose and audience, the translation process and information resources, meaning and equivalence, translation strategies, lexical choices, collocations and figurative language, grammar, cohesion and coherence, culture and names, pragmatics and stance, short general texts, revision, technology, and professional responsibility. The course provides a foundation for later specialist study. Clear English explanations are supported by original bilingual teaching cases, worked examples, guided activities, five Practice and Apply tasks per chapter, short quizzes, and explained answers. Learning outcomes, roadmaps, infographics, a glossary, and a subject index support classroom and independent study. The flexible course plan is designed for approximately 35–45 contact hours. The textbook belongs to the Translation Studies branch of English Language Studies for EFL University Students. ChatGPT Image generated the illustrations used in the front and back covers and the 32 roadmaps and infographics; exact typography was composed separately, and additional figures use precisely labeled teaching diagrams. The Project Director, Munassir Alhamami, is responsible for the final editorial decisions and released version.
