Abstract

An edge open packing is a set of edges whose endpoints induce a disjoint union of stars. We study the problem of finding a maximum edge open packing in AT-free, chordal, and convex bipartite graphs. For AT-free graphs, we use the oriented star-conflict graph $A_G$, introduced by Das and Santra, for which $\rho_e^o(G)=\alpha(A_G)$, and prove that $A_G$ is AT-free whenever $G$ is AT-free. Consequently, a known maximum independent set algorithm for AT-free graphs yields an $O(n^2+m^4)$-time algorithm for Maximum Edge Open Packing, where $n$ and $m$ denote the numbers of vertices and edges of $G$, respectively. For chordal graphs, we develop an $O(n^4)$-time dynamic programming algorithm over a nice tree decomposition derived from a clique tree, exploiting the structural fact that the endpoint set of an edge open packing intersects every clique in at most two vertices. Finally, for convex bipartite graphs, we obtain an $O(n^4)$-time dynamic programming algorithm based on two boundary indices that separate consecutive star components. This result extends the previously known algorithm for biconvex bipartite graphs and, in particular, provides an improved explicit running-time bound for that class.

Variance of random greedy independent sets in triangle-free graphs

Inspect the vertices of a finite simple graph in uniformly random order, accepting each vertex if none of its neighbors has previously been accepted. Let $X_G$ be the number of accepted vertices. For every triangle-free graph with $n\ge2$ vertices and $e$ edges, we prove $\operatorname{Var}(X_G)\le e((n-2)/n)^2$, with...

Spectral extrema of 1-planar graphs with no short cycles or small cliques

The spectral Tur\'an type problem, initiated by Nikiforov in 2007, aims to determine the graphs among $n$-vertex $H$-free graphs having maximum spectral radius. In this paper, we study this problem for $1$-planar graphs, i.e., graphs that admit a drawing in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. Recentl...

Sharp Rainbow Path Covers in Dense and Complete Multipartite Graphs

A path in a properly edge-colored graph is rainbow if its edges have pairwise distinct colors. For a proper edge-coloring $c$ of a graph $G$, let $\operatorname{rpc}(G,c)$ be the minimum number of rainbow paths needed to cover $E(G)$, and let $\operatorname{rpc}(G)$ be the maximum of $\operatorname{rpc}(G,c)$ over all...

Connected Mutual-Visibility in Graphs

A set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a connected mutual-visibility set if every two vertices of $S$ are joined by a shortest path whose internal vertices lie outside $S$, and the subgraph induced by $S$ is connected. We introduce the connected mutual-visibility number $\mu_c(G)$, defined as the maximum cardinality o...

On the maximum number of triangles in tripartite graphs with no $4$-cycles between any two parts

Let $G$ be a $3$-partite graph with $k$ vertices in each part such that the bipartite graph induced by any two parts contains no cycle of length four. Fischer and Matou\v{s}ek [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2001] asked for the maximum number of triangles in such a graph. They obtained the lower bound $(1-o(1))k^{3/2}$ and...

Computing and Bounding the Number of Eulerian Orientations for Certain Classes of $4$-Regular Graphs

The bounds on the number of Eulerian orientations for certain classes of connected, loopless $4-regular graphs are improved and a divide-and-conquer algorithm is provided that leverages structural properties to compute the exact number of Eulerian orientations for separable graphs without exhaustive enumeration.
