Abstract
This research note examines the experiences of Black caregivers with children aged 8 years or younger awaiting a developmental or autism evaluation during a global pandemic. We recruited participants from developmental–behavioral pediatric waitlists in a mid-Atlantic U.S. state. Using a mixed-methods design, we analyzed data collected in 2021 (

= 17). Survey results revealed significant financial strain: 88% expected income loss, and most faced difficulty meeting basic needs. The thematic analysis identified four key themes: (a) financial and employment challenges, (b) child social and behavioral impacts, (c) service barriers, and (d) positive health and social impacts. Despite facing adversities, caregivers reflected resilience and adaptability. These findings underscore the importance of culturally responsive support systems and flexible service delivery models to better serve Black families not only in public health emergencies, but also within routine care.
The findings revealed that parents rely on services offered by healthcare providers, education specialists, and social service programs to support their children in the public and private sectors to support their children in the public and private sectors.
