VOCABULARY AND CULTURAL LINKAGES: A CONTEXTUALIZED STRATEGY FOR VOCABULARY LEARNING
Abstract
This study sought to determine how a contextualized approach enhances the vocabulary skills of Grade 8 Filipino students during the school year 2025–2026. It focused on students' ability to identify literal synonyms, understand meanings from context, and correctly use words in sentences and everyday situations. The researcher utilized a quasi-experimental design, specifically the Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. Fifty-five students from Balligui High School participated and were divided into an experimental group and a traditional group. Before the intervention, both groups showed similar vocabulary knowledge levels. After implementing the said strategy, the experimental group outshined the traditional group in all assessed skills. Students who learned through the contextualized method demonstrated greater progress than those who learned using conventional techniques. Overall, these findings suggest that a contextualized strategy more effectively supports vocabulary acquisition and deeper language use. The study highlights the importance of incorporating meaningful contexts in teaching Filipino to help students learn new words in a more engaging way.
