Abstract
The growing intensification of contemporary socio-environmental issues has expanded discussions regarding sustainability, environmental preservation, and the role of education in the development of critical and socially aware individuals. In this context, the present study analyzed the relationship between territory, sustainability, and teacher education, understanding selective waste collection as a practice of critical Geographic Education within the school environment. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative and descriptive approach, based on studies published between 2020 and 2026 in the CAPES Journal Portal, SciELO, Latindex, and OJS repositories. The findings demonstrated that critical Geographic Education contributes to citizenship formation and the strengthening of socio-environmental awareness by promoting the understanding of relationships between society, nature, and territory. It was observed that selective waste collection, when integrated into pedagogical practices, increases students’ participation in environmental discussions and encourages sustainable attitudes in schools. Furthermore, the relevance of teacher education for the development of critical and interdisciplinary methodologies focused on sustainability was highlighted.
