Abstract
We present a simple structural model explaining why contemporary AI firms release their most capable models gradually rather than all at once. Building on a unified structural equation of contests, we define the success index Q = P e ( F F0 − e ) , where P is own product performance, e is rival performance, F is own ability, and F0 is expected ability. Under exponential growth assumptions P = e wt, e = e rt, F = yeαt, F0 = zeβt , we obtain the headroom exponent x = α w , and the success index Q = y z e (α+w−β−r)t − e wt . We show that: (i) sustained success requires α + w > β + r; (ii) the headroom x = α/w is decreasing in the release speed w; (iii) a rapid release (large w) reduces headroom and increases one-hit risk; (iv) a staged release (moderate w) preserves headroom and supports sustained success. We illustrate the model with hypothetical firm parameters and argue that the observed staged-release strategies of major AI firms are consistent with the model’s predictions.
The method, ECCOLA, is presented, which aims at making the high-level AI ethics principles more practical, making it possible for developers to more easily implement them in practice.
