Climate change scenarios for Southern and Southeastern Mexico, along with their precipitation projections using the CMIP6 CNRM-ESM2-1 model

Abstract

This study focuses on generating precipitation projections for the IPCC-AR6 future periods (2021-2040, 2041-2060, and 2081-2100) in the southern and southeastern regions of Mexico, utilizing the CNRM-ESM2-1 general circulation model from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The model selection is based on Andrade-Velázquez & Montero-Martínez (2023). Statistical downscaling was performed using the quantile mapping technique. The trends in the projections for each period were calculated and compared with the historical ERA5 data from 1980 to 2014 using the z-score equivalent (z-eq.). Additionally, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was calculated for future periods across the study regions. The results indicate that dry periods will become longer, while wet periods will vary with latitude and longitude. These findings contribute to the development of adaptation measures to address climate change in this region of Mexico.

The WRF model as a new tool for investigating climate change in the Carpathian region - Near-future projections of temperature and precipitation

This study presents the first application of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for regional climate modelling in Hungary, specifically adapted for the Carpathian Basin. Simulations for the historical (1985–2010) and future (2020–2045) periods were conducted using WRF with a 10 km grid spacing, downscalin...

Climate driven shifts in precipitation and mean temperature in western Iraq (Anbar Province): spatiotemporal projections using LARS-WG 8.0 and CMIP6

Understanding the spatial and seasonal redistribution of temperature and precipitation is essential for climate adaptation in arid regions. Although recent studies in Iraq have applied statistical downscaling and CMIP6 projections to selected watersheds and water-resource systems, province-scale assessments of how seas...

Spatial Patterns of CMIP6-Projected Climate Change Across Andean–Amazonian Ecoregions of Northeastern Peru

The Andean–Amazonian transition zone in northeastern Peru is one of the most climatically diverse and complex regions in South America, yet knowledge of its ecoregions under climate change remains limited. This study assessed projected changes in mean annual temperature, accumulated annual precipitation, and incident s...

PROJECTED CLIMATE CHANGE AND HYDROCLIMATIC EXTREMES BASED ON THE CMIP6 MULTI-MODEL ENSEMBLE: A CASE STUDY OF THE ARAL–SYR DARYA BASIN

The Aral–Syr Darya Basin, a complex mountain–plain river system, is already experienc-ing strong climatic and anthropogenic stress affecting water security. This study analyzes observed climatic changes and provides a probabilistic assessment of future climate con-ditions in the region. The analysis is based on climate...

CMIP6 Multi-Model Ensemble Projections of Climate Change Impacts on Precipitation, Temperature, and Climate Extremes in the Anai Watershed, West Sumatera, Indonesia

Climate change increasingly affects hydroclimatic conditions at the watershed scale. This study assessed the projected changes in precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures, and climate extremes in the Anai watershed under the CMIP6 emissionscenarios SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. Three CMIP6 GCMs (NorESM2-MM, NorESM2-LM,...

Projections of tropical cyclones and their formation regions in CMIP6 climate models

This study evaluates changes in tropical cyclone (TC) characteristics under different future emissions scenarios in a large set of climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The Okubo–Weiss–Zeta parameter (OWZP) TC detection method is used to identify large-scale conditions conducive...
