Abstract

This research paper explains the transformation of traditional libraries into digital libraries due to the rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The paper discusses the concept, need, major features, benefits, and limitations of digital libraries. It also describes modern services provided through digital libraries, including online reference services, e-reference services, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Current Awareness Services (CAS), e-book and e-journal services, digital repositories, OPAC/Web OPAC, document delivery services, inter-library loan and resource sharing, mobile library services, QR code-based services, plagiarism detection, reference management, AI-based information services, and digital literacy services. In addition, the application of modern technologies such as cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Generative AI, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), RFID, Blockchain, Knowledge Graphs, Linked Data, Semantic Web, Open Access Repositories, mobile technologies, and chatbots in digital libraries is discussed. Finally, the paper highlights the future directions of digital libraries, the concept of smart knowledge centres, and the changing role of librarians.
